OK...I don't know. I hear people say that it's a cultural thing, it's in their culture, etc...the same goes the other way. Yes, my fiance can be jealous at times and I know there are things that he may overreact about, but at the same time, he should understand MY culture too. It really needs to be give and take. Fortunately, in my case, my fiance also tries to see things from my point of view (culturally). I mean, he should. He's not marrying a Moroccan woman - he's marrying me. Yes he will get jealous sometimes but not always necessarily because he's "arab"..but because he's a GUY! As far as being controlling, he's my fiance/soon-to-be husband, NOT my father and I think that's where the line should be drawn.

But even so....my parents don't try to control me. They trust me to be a smart, level-headed young woman that will make the right choices. I think spouses should have that same respect for each other. Though I don't always see jealousy so much as a lack of trust but more as a lack of self-esteem and concern about self-image. I mean, do these men really get jealous because they "love" you so much or is it because they're concerned about what others will think about them, or how they feel about themselves? (how many times do we hear that word of "respect"?)

We shouldn't marry people expecting to change them. But here, if a man defends his wife's honor by assaulting someone who looks at her funny and then gets arrested for it, he won't gain anyone's approval as he might in his birth culture. By the same token, most people won't look down on him here if he wife makes small talk with a stranger on the street. He might as well start learning that before he arrives -- it will save everyone a lot of grief later. As for jealousy as proof of love, even if "protective jealousy" gave me the warm fuzzies in the beginning, that would get old real quick. Constantly walking on eggshells around a mate is no way to spend a life.

The first time I went to Morocco men would look, and when my husband first saw it it did upset him. But I explained to him that it didn't matter what they did, my heart was with him. He was able to loosen up, and after he realized how silly it was we actually laughed about it each time it happened. There is trust between us now, and it feels good not to have to defend every action I make. He does mention when I am showing cleavage however, which is fine by me because that is not something I want to show as well.

My first husband had weird jealousy issues, and I do not want to go through that again. It can be a living He!!.

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'
