Hi there VJ,

I have a question regarding translating my birth certificate. VJ gives instructions on this and a sample form to certify this has been translated accurately... What I want to know is, do I have to take my birth certificate to a person/company that translates documents? I am fluent in italian and english so can I translate it? How does this work?

And.. What about the Birth Certfcate? Does it need to be certified or just a photocopy is fine?

Thank you very much to everyone!

A photocopy of your Italian birth certificate if fine. You can do the translation yourself (that's what I've done for mine), just write your name in the appropriate field of the certification text.

A photocopy of the "Estratto di Nascita" is fine. Keep the original unless they specifically ask you to provide it.

You can translate your own birth certificate by attaching a note where you state you are fluent in both languages and the translation is true and correct to the best of your knowledge (like for other legal documents).

Good luck!

I've yet to leave for the US, but I had already thought about asking a friend to sign the translation for me... However, if you say we can do it ourselves, that would be even easier and quicker! :)

That is definitely quicker and cheaper! I only wish I had gotten the right birth certificate!

Oh well.. it's a quick fix :)

You should get the translation notarized at a bank or library. :)

No need for such thing, do it yourself and sign the certification.

I am a little puzzled as your timeline suggests you have already completed the K1 process during which you would have already have had this done for the K1 visa?.... I recall having my police certificate and translation original plus copies so that I could keep the original and simply copied the originals again.

The Consulate in Naples doesn't ask for translations if the original document is in Italian - only if it is in a language other than Italian or English. I didn't have my birth cert translated either, but I will do so now for AoS.

My University language professor to translate it for me. She translated everything on the Birth Certificate, typed on a word document, and printed on a official school paper. It looks very professional.

Most importantly, she have to add the paragraph at the bottom stating "I, (translator's name), certify that I am fluent in the English and (your language) languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled (document name)" , dated and signed with her name and contact information.

I attached her original signed translation with the PHOTOCOPY of my foreign language birth certificate (my mom warned me not to send the original since once I send it I can't get it anymore) This is what I done and send it with my AOS applications, and I have no problem with it (knock wood).

For your reference, I read some other threads before, some people did got it notarized or certified copy of the translation. Some just got it translated from a friend. BE SURE TO ADD THE LAST PARAGRAPH to show the translator certify that he/she is fluent that language. Since it is hard to find a licensed translator to translate mine, so I got it translated from a language professor.

Note that if you found someone to translate, ask him/her to print 3 copies and sign for you just in case. One for I-485, one for I-130, and other for future use. HOPE THESE HELP!
