I had a futon I put together myself. It was not expensive & good price for the budget & quality (I was a student back then). I was/am not very good with tools but I survived. I like Ikea.

depending on how much you pay for the furniture it could be weak and fall apart or it might not, it is best to check the models in the store. i have a number of their bookcases back home in the uk and they are just fine as long as they are attached to the wall to prevent them from falling over. people always say their furniture is hard to put together but i always seem to manage fine. the instructions have no words it's all pictures so sometimes they aren't always clear. if you are really stuck you can call for help with that but i've never needed to.

the one thing i really hate about ikea is how you are forced to walk around a set route which can take 2 hours unless you know the shortcuts from one department to another. getting stuck behind people with strollers there makes me want to go crazy. :innocent:

Ten years ago I bought a bed, a matress, pillows and duvet with duvet covers from IKEA and was pretty happy with it. The whole thing was expensive (over $1000 for the bed) but it was the cheapest I could find in that store. But I remember walking around the store for like 3 hours and not liking any of the styles they have, it's definitely not for me. I'm not a big contemporary design kind of gal though.

The word on the street is that IKEA products are kind of hard to assemble. Don't know whether that's the case.

They'll open a store here next spring. Looking forward to that.

Actually, Naomi (as in your daughter) could assemble them easily; admittedly, "W" and Gordon Brown would find them incomprehensible.

We purchased a queen-size bed from Ikea (the futon we purchased from Mattress Factory) in May 2006 for a total cost of about $450--$200 for the bedframe and $250 for the futon, and a roughly-queen-size sofa-bed in April 2007 for $230.

Where we come from - Ikea furniture is often referred to as 'student furniture' - for what it is, small (usually) inexpensive and stylish, it's great - but it is MDF and knock-down (meaning you put it together) which typically doesn't survive moves very well.

As long as you know this going in, you can make a wise buying decision.

I've had two leather sofas now from Ikea that I have been really happy with. Hard wearing, strong and exactly what I was looking for. They are also very reasonably priced compared to other leather sofas on the market.

At the other end of the price range I love the big boxes of tea-lights and candles.

Putting together Ikea furniture isn't inherently difficult, but the way the instructions are designed makes it more complicated than it should be. It's not unusual to see the instructions flipping a piece of furniture over several times, but give virtually no indication of such move. This can lead to incorrectly piecing together stuff, which means you'll have to take it apart and reassemble it.

If Ikea provided visual and written instructions (for those times when their poorly drawn schematics fail to say anything useful), I'd be all in favor of it. As it is, Ikea furniture is great for smaller items unless you know for a fact you'll have at least one other person assisting you. Even if the other person (or people) can't put together squat, they could at least offer second or third opinions on what the instructions are trying to say, so the job doesn't take more time than it should.

We love Ikea.. don't buy the low end furniture.. unless you like disposable furniture. But the household stuff and cards and pictures etc. are all amazing and you can get real good deals PLUS the cafeteria ... mmmmm meatballs!!

We are careful what we buy there, and make sure that we don't buy something that looks cheap, or if we do buy it we have the right expectations that it might not last too too long :)

Just have to follow directions in assembly and take your time.. it's not like walmart furniture that puts itself together.. I put together a cabinet for our bathroom and usually I get frustrated and throw things.. so if I can do it, anyone can do it.
