So i am getting ready for my husband insha'allah at the beginning of the year and need to spruce things up around here. I saw the prices and items at Ikea that seemed appealing but i've heard good and bad.

I don't mind paying more for an item it it works but with today's economy if i can save a few buck why not?

Anyone have any experience with Ikea products?

I don't find them hard to assemble at all. Basically, the directions are illustrations and not written directions. For someone like me who is a very visual person this works well when it comes to assembling. If you're not a visual learner it might be a bit more challenging.

I like IKEA because they have a wide variety of affordable stuff. Especially since A) we're young B) I'm a recent college graduate we just don't have a lot of money to spend on new stuff...especially if you don't want to go into serious debt.

I used to shop at IKEA when I lived in Ontario, generally I'd stay away from the wooden DIY furniture, (like beds or chairs n stuf...I have a couple of dressers I bought there that are OK though) and just get houshold items like dishes and kitchen utensils there. The sofas and stuff you don't have to put together yourself are probably ok, I dunno, I never bought any. Assembling some of their items have caused more than one of my family members to throw the allen key across the room, it can be quite frustrating. ;)

I do miss IKEA though.

Here's a thread on the same topic you may find informational: Ikea

Personally, I like Ikea. As with all things, you just have to look at the product before you buy so you know what you're getting into. Obviously, pressboard isn't going to be as strong as solid wood.... things like that. But they definitely have some really great products at competitive prices.

You might also want to look on craigslist for furniture. Sometimes you can get gently used stuff for a decent price. Some people are very picky about getting stuff that is used but I don't mind. I got 2 couches for free from friends...they don't match but it's nothing a decent slip cover couldn't fix. If you get a table that is scratched you can get a decent repair kit and cover it up to an extent or put a cloth over it.

I LOVE IKEA! I love putting their furniture together too.

I don't like their store set up though, I always get lost. :(

OMG, this new store in Orlando makes you go all the way upstairs and through the maze to get to the market area downstairs at the other end of the building! I now go in through the exit to cut down on the stress level.

We love Ikea  We have several bookcases, dressers, a computer desk, tv stand, bed frame, and a few other items. Actually, almost all our furniture is from there. Never had a problem assembling their stuff.

I love Ikea! You have to try not to buy the cheapest looking #######, though. We have some really cheap storage things from there, but they stay in the closet. Our dining table and chairs are Ikea and they look great! The assembly instructions are a little difficult. They should add English instructions, I think. Ah well.

Just one thing I don't understand: tourists at the Brooklyn Ikea. #######? They have Ikea everywhere, and you want to spend your time in NY taking a ferry to the Brooklyn Ikea? O..K...

Another thing I learned about Ikea recently: Here in NY major chains have to post the calorie content of their food. At Ikea, the calorie count on most of the dishes in the cafeteria is through the roof! Like a serving of six meatballs was about 900 calories or something. I had half a veggie wrap for maybe 300 calories. It was nuts. Don't plan to eat there! It's not worth it, since the food isn't very good.

Ikea is good if you:

1.are good at putting things together with pictures, not written directions.

2. if you don't plan to move with your things. once i moved with my bedroom furniture it got messed up really easily.

3. are on a budget

4. they have a delicious princess cake in their freezer section for $5.00. :P

5. and like alex said, certain things seem more cheaply made than others. keep your eye out. i personally don't think i would buy a bed, dresser, etc from them ever again. but i would buy some of their plates, cups, bowls, etc. plastic storage containers, maaaaaybe a small dining table for the kitchen (i remember seeing one i liked there a year or two ago), rugs, duvet covers, etc. big purchases are pressed wood. yuck.

That being said, all in all I think its a great place for people on a budget! It serves its purpose but I have to say I am glad I have rid myself of all things Ikea finally.
