Let's hear it for Colin Powell. Watching him on Meet the Press right now. Awesome.

Wonder how long it'll take until someone reduces his endorsement to a pure racial matter.

I won't take long.

Let the smear campaign begin. I can hear the commercial now:

Woman (in hushed tone): "Colin Powell went to the United Nations and told them Iraq possessed W.M.D.'s...scandalous. He has personally cost the American taxpayers trillions of dollars and thousands of American lives. Can his judgment really be trusted?"

If Bush didn't listen to Powell, why should the American people? I mean, Bush is top dog, the rest of us are idiots.

Colin Powell is a distinguished Republican with a very strong record of service in our military and for Republican administrations. His endorsement today of Barack Obama was powerful, thoughtful, reflective. He made it clear that he held McCain in high regard personally and he a great deal of respect for his service. But he finds McCain unsteady and uncertain on the economy. He finds Palin unqualified to be President (although he says the other three are qualified).

This was a powerful, interesting, and for me quite unexpected endorsement.

So ... Powell's decision ... is now your decision? Does this mean you needed someone to follow?

I made it a point to watch him this morning. I like the way he talks. No political bs, no bad mouthing or smearing, he says what thinks, not what he thinks everyone wants him to say. I don't think his decision has anything to do with race and he explained his position quite well. He's not happy with the direction the Republican party has taken.

Powell is a distinguished American, period. Party or race doesn't matter. And he gave his endorsement without a smear to McCain. He calls it as he sees it.

Natty -- I'm not sure you get it, and maybe you strongly don't want to.

The Powell endorsement is huge. It is the strongest statement from the Center-Right of the political spectrum that one can imagine at this late date. It will make a difference among active and retired military -- and those voters are concentrated in Florida, Virginia, and the Carolinas. It probably won't push Obama over the top in South Carolina -- but it may help him get to the top in the other three states.

Reason is not automatic. Those who deny it cannot be conquered by it - Ayn Rand

The interesting thing about the Colin Powell endorsement for Obama supporters is that if he had not endorsed Obama, he would be dismissed as irrelevant to the process. Because he has endorsed Obama, he is now in the vanguard for making the way smooth for Obama to lead. All in all, the reaction is self-serving.

I hope that Obama loses, but if he wins, it will undoubtedly be a Pyrrhic victory for him and for us. Those of us who weren't enthralled by him will have that to remind you of.
