I love leeks! never put them in my shepherd's pie though... must try that :)

I saute them in butter and kinda decorated the mash on top with them because that's what I saw his sister do with cottage pie. She also puts a little grated cheese on the mash.

Since you're in Houston, have you tried Richmond Arms, a pub on Richmond near Fountainview? Lots of beers and good authentic food like real Heinz beans, etc.

Oh and I just noticed the post about the Cost Plus Market. There's one on Richmond just a few blocks from the Richmond Arms Pub.

Shaz--We have a bunch of Sainsbury's Red Lable tea in the cupboard. He likes it too.

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

The Whole Foods (used to be called Harrys I think) near us has an amazing British food section. They have loads of jarred curry's too, Sharwoods, Pataks and for those posh foodies the Loyd Grossman variety. I was very impressed. Love that store anyway and now I make Alan take me twice as often. http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/

  • 2 weeks later...

I guess I'm living in the wrong place in Texas. My local HEB only carries Tetley British Blend and Twinings (but every1 and their dog carries Twinings). I think Albertson's here carries PG Tips (in the pyramind bags no less!!), but I've been drinking Tetley for so long, I don't like the taste of PG anymore!

I just wish I could go into a store and be able to pick up stuff like salad cream, brown sauce, curry sauces, cadbury sweets, without having to order it online!

I think we need to move!!!!

Well San Antonio is the home of HEB. I thought Harry E. Butt started the chain there. Look and see if they have a "super" HEB in town. I don't remember what they call it..hmmmm HEB Plus I think. Or in Houston they have Central Market by HEB. See if they have one of those.

there's definitely a Central Market in San Antonio... well, it's on their website at least; I haven't been there myself :)

and as I've said in a few threads now - check out small independent Indian and Pakistani shops... they often have a surprising range of British foods; we've found everything from Ribena to Patak's to Lion chocolate bars to Colgate Herbal toothpaste :)

Thanks for the replies Nich-nick/stilltheprettiest...Unfortunately I'm a 3-4hr drive from San Antonio. I live in the relatively small town of San Angelo in West Texas, so the only time I could get to visit these stores is if I'm in the area, which I will definitely do next I need to go down there. I was in Lubbock a few weeks back, but didn't have time for any sightseeing!!!

And we don't have any independent Indian/Asian food markets either. This town is quite a bit set in it's ways as far as food is concerned. I've often thought that an Indian restaurant might go down well here, but they don't really like trying new things here!

man, that's frustrating :(

well, I guess your only options are to stock up when you visit 'civilisation', and/or make some internet orders... not as fun as browsing and discovering things though :(

talking of Indian food, I've introduced my husband to pappadams, and he LOVES them... also all manner of curries, and laksa (which is Thai, but y'know ;) ), and raita, and daal... it's great fun :)

I'm so used to Indian and Turkish foods being almost the default 'ethnic' food, from living in London, so not being able to find good Turkish bread, and halloumi, and proper tzatziki, and so on, is very frustrating

the pay-off is in the great Mexican food, of course ;)

Yes, but I'm not totally screwed. My local HEB does have some of "Taste of India/Taste of Thailand" frozen meals that Central Market make. And they're not too bad. I steer clear of Thai food (too hot for me!). But I regularly buy the Korma and Madras boxes. And on the odd occasion I make my own curry with some Sharwoods curry powder I've got in the kitchen cabinet. I also bought some frozen Naan bread at HEB once as well. It was ok. But of course they no longer carry it!

As for Mexican food, I really can't stand it. The only thing I'll touch is Fajitas, but they've now become a staple of the American diet, you can't really call it Mexican anymore (depending on how it's made anyway) and Tacos as well. But that's it.

We call it Tex-Mex. It's different than the Mexican food you would find in Mexico City or Arizona. And up north, they think Taco Bell is Mexican food.

Dear Brits,

On behalf of radioactively hungover Americans everywhere, I'd like to personally thank you for your gift to the meal of breakfast, and to the world in general:

I had one of those breakfasts yesterday! Though you need to add black/white pudding & fried bread to yours to make it complete. :)]

Right now I'm awaiting my scotch pie heating up in the oven. Thankfully our local store has stocked up again on Heinz baked beans. They had a vegetarian version that I tried, eww that was disgusting!! Lunch will be washed down with a tin of Irn Bru. :D

On Friday I will get my fried pizza fix at the Chicago Kriskindlemarket. Can't wait for that.
