I am about to get my EAD card. It should be approved soon since I have been waiting for over 90days.

Now, I have been thinking about applying jobs like macy's etc. I know it is not the best job, but it is hard to find a decent job without experience and in this economy. I want to earn some experience during this holiday season.

Has anyone applied jobs online? How did you put your previous job and previous wage?

I tried to apply online for nordstrom, but the website does not let me continue unless I put a state where I worked previously. But, my previous job was in my home country and we use different currency.

Is it ok to apply online even though I do not have EAD yet?

Any advice? Please.

We 'picked' a state and put city/country in the "city" portion of online apps.

The problem with applying early - before your EAD is approved - is that most applications - online or not - ask you to certify that you're legally allowed to work. You have to tic/check-off the box saying you are, so if you're not you're not exactly telling the truth.

Our online applications have an "Acknowledgement and Certification" section that states "...I certify that the information herein, and all documents included with my application, is complete, accurate and truthful to the best of my knowledge and belief...I understand that any misrepresentation or material omission on this application or during any employment interview constitutes grounds for refusal to employ me or for immediate dismissal if I am subsequently employed..." (ellipses have a bunch of specific stuff to our university)

Yes, there is a statement "Are you a citizen or national of the United States, or an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence, or an alien authorized by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States?" that must be answered. Usually, permanent residents also mention that they are authorized in their cover letters.

Our HR department has said that the application with "electronic signature" is a legal document, so you need to be careful about "creative answers". I would suggest that if you have a question about how to answer, send an email to the employer, I expect there must be a contact of some sort. I see NOrdtrom has a link for other opportunities, where you can past in a cover letter and resume.

As an aside, I relatively frequently get applicants for research positions, who do use their home country's currency - if it is someone we are considering, I use a currency converter to figure out what their salary was.

Any online applications I've completed did normally have a part asking if you had permission to work. If you don't have that permission and you tick yes.. what happens come interview time or job time and you don't have an EAD? It's annoying I know I've been there before, but my advice would be to wait for the EAD then start applying. Now if you're checking your case status online and it says your card was ordered or mailed... then ticking yes wouldn't be such a bad thing.. would it?.. I suppose it's a personal choice and a bit of a gamble. If you're applying for a good job you really want online I'd also send in a paper application just to be sure!

One other thing to note, my EAD was sent back by USPS because I didn't have my name on the mail box!!!.. Please ensure you name is on the inside/outside of your mail box so you get you're USCIS mail. I got everything else but not the stupid EAD because of this.. Ever since we've had our family name on the inside of the box.

Good Luck with the job hunt!!

Thank you so much everyone. It seems that I should wait.

Since I am applying for macy's, I need to fill out the online application no matter what.

I will contact a local congressman on Monday and also USCIS. I hope I can get approval e-mail at least.

I cannot go to an interview!
