Traveling while waiting for possible interview

Hi,

My wife and I will be applying to remove conditions in about two weeks (San Diego). I know from reading other posts that we can expect the biometrics at some time about a few weeks after that. We were wanting to travel to China for a few months in 2009 and were wondering what might happen if we are called for an interview while we are there. I know not everyone gets called for one but I suppose we would have to assume that it's a possibility. In that case I figure we would have to be ready to come back to the U.S. at a moments notice or just stay here until she gets approved. Am I reading the situation correctly? I mean there are no exceptions if you are overseas and get called in right?

Thanks for your help!
