I am CR-1 and applied for my SSN on September 24, 2008. I was wondering how long it takes to receive the card? I'd like to open a bank account and get my Hawaii DL but need the SSN first. Is there some place to call to check the status of my application.

BTW, I applied in person at the local SSA in Hilo, HI.

Thanks in advance.

just wait for the mail.

You can take Learner's Permit first,

in my case, since i dont have SSN yet when I got my Learners permit, i went to DMV, they make a letter to SSA office for me to be permitted to take Learner permit (hand carried it) , give my passport, I-94, BC, if they will permit you, they will fax the letter to the DMV . before to go back to the DMV same day, it was already there and they started processing my papers , give my the questionaires and took the test, luckily I passed and got the permit same day, then i started learning to drive. and took the road test.

Here is my Learning to Drive archive. just scroll down and look for the title. good luck

My husband and I waited the two weeks for his card to arrive and nothing came. He checked the SS# issue box on his paperwork, so we should have just gotten it automatically (no such luck)...at the social security office, he was in their system as having a card issued so we had to fill paperwork for a replacement card.....waited another two weeks..nothing....finally six weeks after we arrived back in the states, *two* social security cards came in the mail--go figure!

Mine took about 2 - 3 weeks. My EAD was different, they sent it back as I didn't have my name on the stupid mailbox. I don't know if they could/would return something from the SSA for the same reason?

Just thought I would update.

I went to the SSA office today to see where they were at with my SSN. The lady (who actually took my form/info when I applied) said that she had sent away the application that day and it was approved on the 29th. She said it should have been in the mail that day and already here. So she printed me off a form indicating that I do have a SSN and provides the #.

She said that if it doesn't show up by next week, to come back into the office and she will formally request a replacement. She was very helpful.

So I can finally go to the bank tomorrow and open an account and finally change over my DL to a Hawaiian one. YEAH! :)

Applied the day after entry into the U.S. Card arrived less than 2 weeks later.

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.
