Colin Powell Might Endorse Obama.

Powell did seem credible - up to the point where he went to the UN and tried to sell satellite pictures of crappy old vans as mobile chemical weapons laboratories.

Who fed him the information which was based on a source that wasn't even remotely reliable? Did he know this or was he making his case based on what he thought was credible information? Big difference.

Colin Powell's credibility comes from the fact that he is a great American success story; the child of immigrant parents who pulled himself up by his own bootstraps. His intelligent service to the military and the nation, dignified love of country, impeccable personal reputation, and ability to transcend race, have been key factors in maintaining his credibility across political divisions.

Powell would do well to avoid endorsing anyone if he tends toward Obama, who opposes everything that Powell has been perceived to represent. It would produce a seimic paradigm shift in his image across party lines. Like Oprah, who seriously damaged her image as a universal agent of female empowerment when she announced her support of Black, male Barack over White female, Hillary, Powell's endorsement of Obama would be seen by conservatives as race-based rather than rational, considering the incongruity of such a stance.

I love Colin Powell; I hope he stays above it all.

Seriously VW, I hope he reads your letter begging him to re-think his position - we wouldn't want anyone to lose all credibility because of Barack Obaman, now would we? I presume from the bolded that you fear Mr Powell has suffered a dose of 'white guilt' May we all wish him well in his recovery.

I suspect he will neither candidate, but give his forthright opinions on both. Given his past history, I think he would draw the line at supporting either candidate, mainly because they are both too partisan in their politics, whereas he serves his country and owes no allegiance to any political party.

I doubt he will and as I said, his endorsement should be neither here nor there in the bigger picture. People have the ability to make their own minds up, one way or another. American politics is facinating in one way, and yet oh so crude.

Why do we give so much credence to the views of one person? I mean, it's interesting to find out what he thinks, but it's not like any one person's endorsement should lead to wide scale panic from either side, should it?

It would be a major endorsement considering he was a Republican Secretary of State and a lifelong Republican.

I met him in 1986 when he was Commander of the U.S. Army Fifth Corp. He asked me how I liked the Army. I told him I didn't like it a whole lot and he replied "It's for some of us and not for some of us". I had to dig a foxhole that was 6" X 6" with a small shovel because I answered honestly. He didn't make me do it my Section Chief ordered me to. I think he would have shot me if he could have!
