Filipinos Learning How to Drive

Claudeth is only 4'8" so trying to drive my Dodge 1500 may be a bit much. She likes Volkswagons so we might get her a bug or something once she completes the driving school.

Wow...she is tiny! :o

Jinky's father taught her how to drive a multi-cab - stick shift a few years before we met. When she arrived, she was driving with PI license here in Cali until her Green Card arrived and then passed the written after 3 tries and the driving exam on the first attempt.

Good luck. :)

Yea, she is very petite! I am going to enroll her in a driving school. I tried to see what insurance was going to cost and it shocked the heck out of me. The estimates I got was somewhere around $300 a month. Aneone else see rates like that, specifically in California?

Luckily for us here in FL, we are not asked to do a parallel parking. The good officer just took me to the small roads behind the DMV office and asked me to do an abrupt stop while driving at 20mph and a 50meter reverse. When returning to the DMV office I had to park and she asked me few questions about parking if I was driving uphill. I was done in 10 min.

About the insurance, my husband used to pay about $113 to $120 monthly insurance for his truck and the toyota corolla. Since I was added as a main driver to both vehicles now we pay about $125 to $130 montly. They considered me a safe driver because of my age so it was not so bad. I drive an old toyota corolla because as a new driver I feel I don't need a new car. I have not been in an accident before ( knock on wood!) but I want to wait and drive some more before we trade in the toyota for a new car.

Removal of Conditions :

August 16, 2010 - Petition received by USCIS Vermont Center

August 20, 2010 - NOA1 received

October 4, 2010 - Biometrics

January 3, 2011 - Permanent 10 yr. Green Card Received.

We are in California. We paid $344 for our insurance and that is good for 6 months. We paid $250 for my driving lesson and that is for 6 hrs.

Wow, I only got an estimate just for her so maybe I will go to my insurance company and see what they offer. I currently pay about $500 for every six months on my Dodge 1500. Maybe I should think about getting a cheaper car :P

I hope the instructor will not ask me to do the parallel parking. I have my schedule now for my drving test. I'm so nervous thinking about it although I been driving for a couple of months now..(of course with my learners permit).

Yep, they did ask me to do parallel parking... but up to now, I still have problems parking  (but my husband said I'm getting better, have not hit anything so far). One tip I got from the instructor (driving school) is that you can try to go to DMV (with a different car that you will use for the test) and follow those that are having the drive tests, in that way, you will know the roads/route they usually do for the drive test. And for the drive test, exaggerate on your movements when you look through your right and left side (the blind spots) before changing lanes... they (DMV) have to see that you look first before changing lanes. Good Luck on your drive test.

There's a YOU TUBE video regarding DMV Drive Test, there's about 11 or 12 videos and also the top 10 reasons for failing the drive test. These videos are from the California DMV. (

Yeah I remember that my driver instructor told me to wear a dangling earings on my road test just the instructor will notice when you look left and right.

My loving husband thought me how to drive, and aside from that i religiously memorize the booklet from the DMV because she will need to pass that test first ,then the actual driving test..get her booklet at DMV anyway it's free..for her to read first. So she will know the rules..

It's been year & half now since i got here in US and still don't have a driver's license heehhe but I already got my permit just 3 months ago, i took the test for 3 times so read & study the handbook b4 you takes the test, now im taking my time to practice everyday & trying to feel comfy on driving and I beleive that's whats matters most...the first time I drove our car on the highway @ 50 MPH was really a never wracking to me, hubby was there coaching but im the type of person that if i want to learn something I would really gonna set time towards it..that was so unforgetable moment for me yet scrary too heheh i would say i still need more practice in neighborhood & memorize the rule on the road & then take driving test beahind the wheel hopefully soon..so for those on their way goodluck & you can do it.

Parallel parking is only hard when your learning once you learned it is not that hard,i had to try it 5 times before i did it perfect, the trick is try to drive backwards at empty park n lot,my husband made me do it thanks for his patience, I get mad when i made a mistake but he never gave up teaching me and I was pretty confident. When i want to learn i will make it happened no matter what it takes.

Did you know how to drive when you arrived in the U.S.? If not, how did you learn?

Claudeth hasn't learned how to drive yet so are starting to look into it.

We don't have a car back in Philippines and what's the point of having a car if you live in one of the isolated places which is nearby the mountain and river? Anyways, when I was in the Philippines I only knew how to ride a bicycle. When I was 16 year old I moved to Canada with my family. I only learnt how to drive when my brother in-law taught me how. We drove around and we end up in the ditch. I also enrolled in our school driving class in high school. In year 2005 I took my road test and falied 5X. I took a year off because of the disappointment. Luckily I had a younger brother who passed his road and got his Canadian license . He was the one who patiently in my side every time I practiced driving. In year 2007 when I was in college back in Canada I passed my road test. NOw I moved here in USA because my wife is USC and I'm still using my Canadian driver's license every time i'm driving. To tell you franky, I'm not a good instructor to my wife because my temper and patient are short.

Anyways, you can ask anyone in your family or friends to teach you how to drive..just some basic steps...or you can pay an instructor to teach you driving but it's quite expensive.

"Have faith in God, Jesus answered. I'll tell you the truth. if anyone says to this mountain, Go, throw yourself to the sea, and that does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen. it will be done for him. Therefore I'll tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours" (MARK 11:22-24)
