Everything was going along nice, joan applied for her s.s. card and got it after a few weeks, then after we married we went down and she applied for a new card with name change, they said 2 weeks, after the 3rd week still not there, we had checked with the s.s. office a few times, we had a change of address for 9/26, I took a better job in denver, we found out the post office will not forward s.s. mail so no card, now they tell us we must wait for her green card to show prove of her name, they say wedding license is not enough, she can not work even though she has a number, but no card. cannot get any id or drivers license, did'nt see this comming. maybe she can get her green card in 5 or 6 months. thanks for listening.

That happened to me before I got hired before but never work due to my ss card it's still reflecting my maiden name and the employer required for an ss card in my married name. I would suggest you go back to the ssn office and ask for the manager or supervisor and explain to her/him the situation. Sometimes you have to be tough so that people will listen to u.

I feel your pain. We've also had problems with SSA. In our case, they wouldn't let her apply for a card until she gets her work authorization, a decision that I believe was just flat-out wrong. Wrong as in the chief at our local office misunderstands the regulations, not as in morally wrong.

Anyway, I hope you can get this straightened out sooner rather than later.

By the way, one can get a drivers license in Iowa without a SSN. I guess that is not true in Colorado.

Lots of people have trouble with the SSA on K-1 visas. Usually the SSA office is just ignorant of the law. Most people just go to another office where they are more knowledgable. Sometimes asking to speak with a supervisor works. I would print out the page from the SSA website that explains it and take it with me. Here is a link to the PDF of that memo.

Here is a link to the SSA website that states the SSA policy.

Scroll down to the section that says "1. Aliens Work Authorized Without Specific DHS Authorization" Under the part that says "Class of Admission" it specifically states K-1.
