yeah that was a huge in security when we were first maried. I thought that since he was an arab man, he would want me barefoot in front of the stove. Unfortunately though someone got to pay my bills as we American women don't have the luxury of a man working for us:) Well, what ended up happening was his sister would get in between us and "feel bad for her brother because an american woman cannot cook and he loves his arabic food". So he'd spend a lot of tiem over there when i was at work or whatnot eating. So I would come home and ask him if he'd want anything and he'd say no. But I'd see him eating cookies though or even grapes. It was like he did not want me to cook at all. (although I did make foul for him and he did say he liked that but I kidna skimped on the olive oil....) But a few months ago when my sister in law's son said to me "You have to learn how to cook arabic food. Your husband is not going to like American ####### like Burger king and all that. Welcome to Islam. Learn to cook".

I got mad at this and asked my husband over the phone "Habibi are you going to make me quit my job and stay home and cook for you when you get your visa and come over here?"

His response to that when I told him what my sister in law and her son said to me? He was like "Habibi khave I ever asked you that? what did we do before? Sometimes you cook and I cook sometimes. And it's simple and that is fine. I know you work and we can have simple food that is fine. And when we don't feel like cookking we will eat out."

Wow, I've got a good guy!

Personally I wouldn't bother making pita bread/Arabic bread when you can go buy freshly made ones daily and it saves a TON of time. Then since you will be working, and not slaving over the stove all day, you can focus on making other dishes for him and not wasting your time on the bread!

Oh if only my husband had his sister close by. I wouldn't care how much he ate her cooking, less for me to do!

I don't make the bread often, that's for sure. Course it's just me and bread isn't my friend, but I love it fresh too. If I find somewhere to buy it fresh, I will. I love making the other dishes and learning how to do it. But DanG! they do a LOT of chopping and dicing and mincing. No wonder they don't work, they are working! I also have no idea if I'm doing it right since I don't have Ahmed here to taste it for me.

When I went to Egypt I remember the first meal he ordered for me was spaghetti and french fries. I just looked at him and said what is this? He said that's what I ordered for you. I said, I can get this at home. I want to eat the food you have here. If you order "American" food for me again, I'll start ordering for myself. After that I started getting the most wonderful dishes and tried everything possible (even okra - blech!). I'm sure when our men get here, they will be interested to do the same thing. They will try our food and decide from there.

Plus it's gonna be so fun to learn how to make all that stuff together. I know Ahmed is going to get darn good at chopping, dicing and mincing!

Didn't you say you were planning a trip there sometime soon? Why don't you ask your MIL to teach you his favorite dishes? Have her physically SHOW YOU how to do it, and also write down the recipe and directions as she is showing you so you don't forget. If she doesn't speak English have someone there to translate anything you aren't sure of what it is or amounts. Even taking pictures helps.

I did that many times in Morocco and now I have a full repetoire of dishes my husband likes from his mama! Oh and dishes *I* like too that I wanted to know how to make!

I have a recipe for Melwi if that is what you are looking for.

YUM I love millui. My sisters in law taught me to make it in morocco and now my daughter is addicted to it. I am a millui slave. I can't eat more than 1 piece or I gain 10lbs tho too much carbs

Why not check on our recipe site Mejnoona? There are many good ones on there.

Yeah when my husband gets back, i will go through the thread recipe by recipe. I just dont have time for that now as I'm never home to cook. Only I happened to be home on Friday and was hungry for fresh arabic bread. So I made it but it did not turn out well but now I am out of flour:) So it'll have to wait til habibi is back.

Yes I leave for Palestine on Friday.

I don't spend too too much time with the women because I'm too occupied with my husband. I just want to be with him since I don't get to see him. If we had a normal marriage without immigration, it'd be different and more relaxed. But now it's not because we are apart. I don't know about the women though. I don't feel comfortable with them. I like the men better:) They can talk more freely and I can talk to them easier. Even though they don't speak english either. But it's more relaxed with them. And my husband is there too

Whatever floats your boat! :) I guess I'm too much of a foodie and wanted to learn how to cook our favorite dishes so I could recreate them back in the US. I was willing to sacrifice time with my husband so I could learn to cook! Although a lot of the time he sat in the kitchen with me so he could translate what certain things were that I wasn't sure of what they were. My husband loves to cook (but mostly EAT) too! :P Now that my Arabic is getting better I hopefully won't need him around next time we're in Morocco together.

You are lucky that your husband gives up his manhood without a fight to sit with the women:) My husband did that once when I was there last time but it is considered shame in his family to do that. If the men from the village come, he has to go if he is at the family house. If he's not there, then fine he does not have to go. But if we aer at his family's house and a man stops in from the village, my husband has to split with all the other men and go to the men's section of the house:( And i'm in a corner by myself cuz no one talks to me in the women and tehy all start talking so fast to each other and thats it. I find it more amusing to watch the kids. :) With kids, there is no langauge barrier:))) And teh kids aer fun:)

My husband does not expect miracles from me in the kitchen. It is more important to him that we spend our time together since we'll beth be working. The more time I spend in the kitchen is less time with him and he does not like that because he likees to be spoiled every second:) (but in he will help me cook though and he's not bad!!)

Oh there is no man/women sections in my husband's family home. I'm pretty happy about that!!! :) My husband has a family of women so he is very comfortable with all that. But ask him to come shopping with me, his mom, and sister? No thanks! He would rather wait at home than watch us wander around the souk looking at girlie things. Can't say I blame him.

hehe in my husband's case, the men dominate the women. (in more ways than one). The women are totally submissive to the men. When tehre is not men from the village there, it is different. They can talk to each other like normal people do in the USA. But the minute someone from the village comes in, they aer not allowed to do that. Even if the men aer talking to each other in what I consider to be their family room, the women are not allowed to serve them coffee or tea. The women have to make it and they have to get one of ther boy kids to take it into them since it is ok for the men to see the little boys, but not the girls. Or one of the brothers (the unmarried ones for some reason) come and get the tea or coffee when one of the little boys tells tehm it is ready.

But it is very neat though. My husband's entire family is picking olives as it is olive harvest time in Palestine. Everyone there is excited because I am coming and they want me to pick olives with them:)) I've never picked the olives before. So i will do that and my husband told the women I am their boss. And the women fought him and said no your wife helps us, not bosses us around:) hehe he was joking of course.
