Florida Gov Gives Up on ACORN Message

This morning, Sarah Palin continued to talk about Obama "tolerating voter fraud." It's a little surprising that no one has stopped to explain to the poor governor the difference between voter fraud and registration fraud, but Palin isn't exactly a fact-oriented kind of candidate anyway. But it appears the Republican ticket is going to keep repeating transparent nonsense. McCain, in one of his more pathetic moments last night, argued that ACORN may be in the process of "destroying the fabric of democracy" -- an insane claim that's mysteriously drawn no media scrutiny at all.

Marc Ambinder noted the other day that "it's hard to find an honest GOPer" who actually believes ACORN-related voter registration will help Obama. Once in a while, one is even willing to admit this out loud.

Florida's governor says his fellow Republicans may be exaggerating claims of voter fraud in the state.

Gov. Charlie Crist said Wednesday that he has confidence in Secretary of State Kurt Browning, who says there's only been a scattering of isolated incidents.

Crist said in the closing days of any campaign "there are some who sort of enjoy chaos." There may be more of that going on than fraud, he said.

Crist's candor came one day after McCain, slipping into a sad delusional state, insisted that "vote fraud" might cost him a victory in Florida.

Granted, there's apparently some sort of rift between Crist and McCain right now, with the Florida governor distancing himself from the Republican campaign, but his dismissal of ridiculous McCain/Palin conspiracy theories is nevertheless striking.

Sigh. First, even if that was to happen, early voters are confirmed before their ballots are counted. These people aren't idiots.

Second, in which of "many" states does this happen?

Third, if you actually look at successful examples of vote fraud... they RARELY happen. I think there have been around twenty-six--maybe--voter fraud convictions nationwide in recent years, despite all the hullabaloo around ACORN and other grassroots registration organizations in previous elections. This is NOT a huge problem. It's ridiculous. The entire purpose of creating drama around registration fraud is to create fear and mistrust in the electoral system, thereby creating a culture that permits voter suppression (a much more real and dangerous problem) on election day.

People, don't any of you get what this is REALLY about?

It's not about trying to discredit Obama with an ACORN connection now.

It's not about trying to disenfranchise poor voters.

It's' about the GOP setting the stage for demanding another recount (ala 2000).

My hope is that Obama wins with enough electoral votes that trying to get a state to recount would not be worthwhile to Rep's.
