yes I know there is a difference but not everyone has the option of going to a Farmer's market...

even here in LA the Farmer's Markets are hard to find and too far from where I live...

so I think it is better to eat fruit and veg from the grocery store then to eat none at all...

Completely valid points. I am sure you watch out for the produce you do buy at the grocery stores. But do check out what's available. I am very sure LA has more availability than you'd think. One place to check out are the local Mexican grocery marts. Much of that produce is likely local in origin.

I never said it wasn't available... I really don't think much about it.. I figured any kind of fruit or veg is better than none...

I've heard that often frozen veggies have higher nutritional value than fresh veggies at the grocery store, since they are frozen relatively fresh, while between transport time and shelf time, fresh veggies can be not so fresh by the time you eat them.

When flash frozen, the nutrients literally 'stop' moving and the produce is not allowed to continue its degradation while frozen.

This is assuming harvest and freezing within minutes of each other. Produce begins to lose its nutritional potency 15-30 minutes after its been separated from the tree/plant/soil. The key word is degradation.

Only problem is taste and texture. Frozen produce usually is good for two things- juice/smoothies or cooking.

While fresh produce at the market is indeed less nutritious than when picked, its still more nutritious than eating compounds X, Y, and Z with HFCS and other additives. Purchasing produce on the day its shelved is greatest at a local green grocer.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Never buy your fresh fruit and veggies at places like Walmarts.

You may as well eat canned, for the amount of nutritional value at junky places like that.

Hit your local farmers' markets and/or produce store.

No excuses!

:star:

There is some truth there. I am not afraid of most GMO crops, but I prefer the taste of most non-GMO/organic, go-bad in a couple of days produce anyway. Ironic thing is that I know where to get such 'hippy' food cheaper than at the Sam Walton's of the world.

I see you are in Chicago...which places do you hit up? Here in Roger's Park there are a lot of Mexican groceries...the prices and selection always beat Dominick's or Jewel hands down. If you're ever in this area I highly recommend Morse Market if you are up in this area...they have a great selection of fresh herbs.

Is anyone surprised really. Footpaths are almost non-existent in numerous places I have been too.

Here here...another component of the problem is Americans often don't get in enough physical activity.

Thanks for this, I'll check it out.

I have been going to two different Farmers' Markets.

The ones in Lincoln Park and the one smack downtown.

They are so much fun!

Music and everything....I like that community feeling; especially in this big, noisy city.

I also go to Trader Joe's.

I love Trader Joe's.

And Wild Oats now called Whole Foods, too.

Besides those places I go to a Greek butcher at times on Randolph, close to Green, in River West (I believe). Cheap and really good meat.

And lastly, Greektown for all my other favourite foods (feta, olives, olive oil, etc etc) at their grocery store. (Not often enough though.)

Yeah- when I go to the far north side I usually go to "La Unica" on Devon which specializes in South American groceries (wife has to be kept happy). But for meats I look for any Cermak Produce. Never Costco. Sometiems when I want something more prepackaged I'll go to Trader Joes.

Fresh produce I get at Stanley's on North and Elston. Just off the Kennedy. Its the best place I've seen thus far for a nice selection of veggies and fruits that you can tell are not GMO or mass sprayed since they tend to go bad in a couple of days tops.

OHH YES... the old Meatpacking district that Greektown took over. Very good cuts (and cheap) of meat.

Just as good as the Farmer's Markets, though, is Stanleys. Trust me! (Also cheaper)

Sometimes if I need to go out of the office I'll wander over to the Farmer's Market in Daly Plaza.

I keep on telling my OH we need to go out and get some good Indian food out on Devon. I didn't realize there was a South American store out that way...I always assumed the area was almost entirely Indian/Paki.

Speaking of yay...my husband has a screening at Whole Foods next week. Not really an interview, but I guess they want to check out out before going forth with an actual interview? He used to work at an Marks and Spencer Simply Food so I hope that that will give him the boost he needs to get them to consider him.

Tell your hubby to put some tattoos on his arms and wear a nose ring. That tends to help, as I've noticed! Specially if its the Whole Foods on North and Sheffield.

Personally I think that store is WAY overpriced.

La Unica I think is 1515 W Devon I think.

How about investing in a local farmer's market there? I'm sure the lack of would at the least drive you to think about studying the marketability of such an idea there?

Could someone who is more arsed to do so than me post something to compare the average earnings in the fat states with those in the skinny ones? Ta.

mississippi is at the bottom of the list for earnings lol... lemme find it. poor and fat, who would have thought ;)

edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Household_inc...Income_by_state

ms is right at the bottom :(

I have lived in Mississippi most of my life. I have been at the grocery store in the check out line with my half buggy of groceries (which probably cost $100 or more) and see people ahead of me with 2 or 3 over loaded buggies of groceries and pay with food stamps. So that may explain the quote above.
