Yeah... less earnings, less healthy dietary choices. Under the current food distribution system.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

indeed. people don't have the choice of healthy food, they mostly can't afford it. southern food is cheap and generally bad for you. i could fancy some grits right about now

Wow, Texas is no longer on the list!! That's amazing. I know that Houston was voted the fattest city for like 2 years in a row and the mayor was all up in arms about it and was thinking of implementing ways to bring it down a bit. I guess it worked.

When I was in college one of my roommates decided to become a vegetarian and gained like 20 lbs because eating healthy was a bit pricey. The cheapest things were Ramen noodles and potato chips, so yeah it's not cheap. Same with living green, it's all nice and all but not a lot of people can live in a green home. (And no, I'm not talking about the color). ^_^

She should have gotten into higher protein foods like tofu instead of carb fillers. Sometimes I wonder what the point is of going vegetarian when you don't consider your options carefully. Yes, it can be done but it requires, under today's food distribution system, a heck of a lot of discipline.

Forget that! I am happy with the empanada de pipián I ate this morning for breakfast. Southern enough for ya?

actually I'd say teh made from scratch southern food is not as bad as the boxed premade stuff.. yea they use fat backs on the green beans, but is not as bad as boxed reconstituted mashed taters or something

in ms it is more a case of fried chicken and hamburgers. being on the gulf coast doesn't help, although is it more affluent than other areas in ms, katrina made so much disappear and of course people can't claim the insurance to rebuild - most places that have come back so far are fast food chains. :(

It costs a couple of dollars to make a vat of vegetable soup. Healthy food is affordable but some people prefer to eat fat, sugar and salt loaded foods, pre-packaged ####### and anything that comes of the cesspits that are McDonalds, Burger King, and Arby's. If you are obese because you eat too much or just eat ####### then its entirely your fault. They are certainly more health conscious here in VA, but I've been to WV a few times, and some of the people are just huge, in motorized wheelchairs, and stuffing their faces in Applebees. At what point do these people look in the mirror and think "ooh I am a little heavy - maybe some fiber and a piece of fruit would be a good idea".

Yes, absolutely. There is always the instant-gratification and gluttony component of diet as well.

first off, a lot of poor fat families here work hard to survive, maybe more than one job, so spending all day at home cooking is not an option. secondly, try buying fresh fruit or veg here. walmart has the worst selection i've ever seen, and most of the items are perished. its quite disgusting.

That too.

If people purchased local products, they'd save more. At least that's what I do here in Chicago, a not too skinny city.

there's one once a week two cities over from here in a small place where rich people live. there really isn't anything available here in the big city. it frustrates me because i would rather buy from farmers markets or whatever but the best option we have is winn dixie, which is super expensive.

Winn Disgusting I called it while living in South Florida.

But then again, it was that or Albertsons, and they weren't exactly cheap.

What do you do in those cases?

Well... you eat healthier and spend less on ####### you don't really need.

hehe, winn dixie is the best option here. they at least sell berries and fresh fruit cups. walmart has apples, bananas and melons and not a whole lot else. the bread section is larger than the fruit section. :o

we try and eat healthy but it is really is expensive when you have to resort to winn dixie. i feel bad for the families who can't afford to shop there.

*eats butter grits with pepper* mmmm, and only 140 calories! :)
