why the heck doesn't McCain talk about his opinions instead of trying to bash Obama at every turn??

That's the same criticism from the last debate. He's committed to it now - I guess he's betting on that people are angrier at Obama's background and associations than they are about the state of the country and how McCain plans to fix it.

McCain's only hope is to pull out smear campaigns not unlike those used against him by Rove during the primaries of the 2000 election. It worked for Bush then; however, that was during the primaries and it seems like most Americans aren't going to buy into last minute BS by either party, especially the independent voters.

My theory is that McCain is not 100% stupid. That is, he knows that the specifics of his policies are too unpopular with America and that if he highlights them, he'll fall even further behind.

Some of the polls are already showing drops for McCain for fixating on Obama's character.

Whatever people think about Obama - I think the McCain campaign has done a pretty shoddy job of capitalizing on the smear material.

McCain's only hope is people remember the McCain pre-Bush Administration. Since many people are new voters, they're not going to remember much, because it's not much about what you did 10+ years ago, but what you're doing now. Now, he's a hack, and clearly favors corporations and business over people's rights. He also is way too in love with Joe the Plumber.

McCain did a better job drawing differences between himself and Obama - but he did indulge himself in the petty stuff about William Ayers and the negative campaign ads, which he couldn't have expected to get much traction on in that forum.
