We looked on the Sydney Consulate website and it has the doctors listed that do medical exams in Australia. It says that the exams are good for six months. Is it okay to go ahead and get the medical exam now or do we have to wait for the paperwork indicating that we need a medical exam?

I think it is ok as long as your case is complete at NVC. If the embassy has your paperwork then I don't see a problem.
