Okay, now I've got your attention with the header, I'm talking about my HAIR...

Every summer I have a debate with myself about whether to cut my hair short and be cool, or to keep it long and tied back in a ponytail for the duration. Last summer I dithered long enough that the hottest part of the year was over and I decided to keep it... this summer seems to have got a lot hotter a lot more quickly! I got heat exhaustion on saturday just from going grocery shopping and then going for a swim and lying in the sun for half an hour to dry... my black hair is a huge heat-sink, and a pain when I'm swimming (because then I have to come inside and wash it and wait for it to dry)... if it was shorter it would be cooler and easier to look after... BUT...

DH said I should cut it and donate the ponytail to Locks of Love, but we just measured my hair and it's not long enough! You have to have ten inches minimum, and at present my ponytail is only eight and a half inches long, because I had it cut about six months ago (actually I asked for 'short' and layered at the time but I got medium-long and not layered at all!) And then I got DH to trim a couple of inches off the end of it for me a few months ago because it was getting ragged again. So the end result is that it's about two inches too short for donation. :(

So now I have a dilemma - do I keep my ponytail and grow it another two inches before I get it cut so it's long enough to donate (no idea how long that will take, but probably most of the Summer)? Do I let it grow for another 12 months and donate it next summer instead? Or do I give up the idea of donation and just get it cut and toss the ponytail in the trash?

What would you do?

just remember you can't donate it if it has been chemically treated. The good thing about hair is that it always (almost) grows back! If you're hot, I say cut it- it's only the end of May and you have a lot of summer left.

I've donated my hair to locks of love a couple times so I am all for that and am actually trying to grow my hair over the summer for that purpose, even though it does get hot and sticky. But if it isn't long enough by September I am going to cut it anyways before school starts.

That being said if its going to be a big pain for you over the summer and you are going to hate having long hair, I say cut it now. I have heard that they actually throw out a lot of the hair they get because its not good enough for a wig for one reason or another, so why torture yourself all summer if theres a possibility they won't even use your hair?

That's one reason I wanted to donate it. I've never dyed, bleached, permed or chemically treated my hair in my entire life. I also don't do blow-dryers... my hair is au-natural, only washed with baby shampoo and gentle conditioner and allowed to air-dry. It seems a shame to waste it...

Hi...

Keep it up for the summer, and grow it the 1.5 more inches that is required. Should be another 2-3 months only, and you will feel like a million bucks afterwards.

I used to donate mine also, but now I am riddled with silver highlights that must be dealt with or I look like Cruella DeVille !

Donate it ! :D

Just FYI, I've heard that Locks of Love actually receives far more hair than it actually makes into wigs, and that actually most of the hair it receives, it sells, and then uses the money to buy wigs. (Yes, I know that sounds weird.) IOW donating to LoL may not be all it's cracked up to be. I've never seriously investigated them myself since I dye my hair, but just a heads-up.

They actually say that on their website. A lot of the hair they get isn't actually suitable for wig-making so they sell it to help pay for their costs. It still seems like a good cause... after all they're not getting these custom-made wigs for free - they have to pay for them to be made to measure.

I'd think that since they get a lot of hair donations from children, they're probably not actually long enough to be used for the wigs...
