When you register with the USCIS website you may see a date change on your status page. This is a 'touch' and it looks like this...

Keep in mind, a touch can mean anything or nothing. It simply means your file was picked up and looked at and/or moved to a new location.

So I have some questions about that...

My fiance and I hired a lawyer for the K1 and they sent our application on Oct 2nd. It was received by CVC on the 3rd. But since, we didn't get the NOA1 in the mail yet. Apparently my fiance (the US citizen) and the lawyer should receive a hard copy in the mail. Of course the woman who is taking care of us in the lawyer's office is on vacation for a week now so we won't have news for a week maybe.

I want to check online our application online but we don't have our case number yet.

So do you think it is ok to register with USCIS online if we're filing through a lawyer?

If yes, can I register without the case number? I mean will they find us in their database with our name?

I have a lawyer and my lawyer gave me my case number that allowed me to register. You will need that case number to be able to register.

CVC? You mean CSC? (California Service Center)

You can also check with your bank to see if the check has been cashed, your case number should be stamped on the back. Your lawyer is supposed to let you know if he received your NOA1. My NOA1 was sent to my lawyer since he is representing me.

We asked our lawyer by email today if they had received the NOA1 by mail...

I really hope he did, it's been 10 days. I know it is going to take months between NOA1 and NOA2 but that would be a good step foward knowing that everything really started with NOA1.

I hope he/she is a good lawyer. Please keep at it, my lawyer keeps me posted every step of the way, well my lawyer is my best friend from back in day so we have a good relationship.

I've heard NOA1's can take from 1 day up to 2 weeks. So your lawyer could have received your case number, but it's possible it's still in process or in the mail. Bear in mind that yesterday was a federal holiday, too. Offices and the postal service was closed.

I think he is a good lawyer but his legal assistant usually is the one in contact with us. But she is on vacation now and I'm getting frustrated because we don't have our first NOA. Its been more than 10 days now and he should have received something. We paid him and he paid the USCIS so we can't check on the back of the check. I have questions but I don't want to overwelmed him, he's going to think I'm crazy:)

The easiest way to get your receipt number is to call USCIS Customer Service at 1-800-375-5283. Press the option "2" I think it is then wait for the option if you have lost or never received your NOA1. This will ensure you get to a live operator that can give you your receipt number over the phone. The hard copy may come much later. It took us 33 days to receive ours. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Ours took 25 days. There seemed to be quite the slowdown, just as we filed.
