They also suggested that churches and charity organizations may lose their tax-free benefits.

That's actually not a bad idea. Never understood why churches are tax free, with this pesky separation of church and state thing. Kinda like the Boy Scouts issue, and it's a post McCarthyism era of religion being increasingly in bed with government.

That being said, I felt it was inappropriate for the teacher to take her class to watch her get married. No heterosexual teacher would take their class to watch them get married. I fail to see the educational value in this, but maybe someone else could shed some light for me.

While there's little educational value to a same-sex marriage, I feel like some sort of educational museum or something that showed civil rights akin to the history of African Americans in this country, relating it to gays and their fight for equal rights, that is perfectly fine. But California does have a bit of a history of teachers going over their bounds. I remember switching out of this class from an ultra-environmentalist teacher just because I knew I'd get a shitty grade as I'd feel compelled to debate her philosophies. She had a clear slant and would argue with students. This is college, too. Not high school, not junior high. Kids already have enough trouble with education, and don't need to be distracted any further, especially with all of this coddling and zero tolerance sh!t turning them into impotent babies relying on police officers on campus.

It says it's a 'Charter' school, does that mean it's private? Private schools get up to all kinds of odd stuff that public schools don't have the funding for - it's a bit mad though, I would have been fuming if it was my kid to be quite honest. Kids can learn about equal rights perfectly adequately without attending their teacher's wedding ceremony.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Student have no business using school time to go to ANY marriage.

Hell, it's no wonder Johnny can't read, do math, or write a coherent paragraph.

Agreed.

If the teacher wanted her students to go, she could have scheduled the ceremony during non-school hours with proper wedding invitations.

I agree as well.

FYI, here is information on the school:

The mission of Creative Arts Charter School is to provide K-8 grade students with an innovative, high-quality education through a constructivist approach that focuses on an arts-integrated, project-based curriculum, with the overall goal of giving our students a lifetime appreciation of learning and development of their unique talents and abilities.

Guiding Principles

* Every child is unique and valuable and their thoughts, interest, skills, needs and potential deserve our care and attention.

* Students learn best with a variety of curriculum and teaching methods.

* We respect the art of teaching and employ individuals dedicated to excellence.

* Peer support and on-going professional development of staff is essential to quality education,

* Collaboration is essential to fulfilling our mission.

* Family involvement is critical to school success.

* Respect for all community members defines our actions and our attitudes; it must never be compromised.

I agree, it's full of violence, mental torture of people told to sacrifice their loved ones, murder, abusive of slaves - that whole thing with knocking up the slave girl because the wife can't have kids - ugh. Filth is right.

Not a problem. A lot of kids won't be able to read it anyway or their diplomas.

this is off topic but I LOVE your siggy pic

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Notice how they're all about this touchy-feeling, politically correct, kiss the child's ### #######. There is nothing in there about teaching kids reading, writing, math, responsibility, discipline or how to be a useful, productive and tax paying member of society. Yeah - we'll be going the way of the Roman Empire for sure. Edited by akdiver

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

Whatever happened to "permission slips" for field trips anyway?

The field trip was suggested by a parent at the Creative Arts Charter School, and the school said the trip, where students tossed rose petals on their teacher and her wife as they left City Hall, was academically relevant.

Naturalized! Yeah!

My sister went to a charter high school here and they did all sorts of crazy stuff but she loved it!

My 6yr old cousin went to a private school in Santa Monica and they had some weird parties/field trips.

Its a public school. Charter schools are public in access and MOST state funding, but private in educational and curricular planning for the most part.

But I wouldn't be ticked b/c of its status as a public or private entity. I'd be ticked as a parent b/c of the diversion away from academic time.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

If the church doesn't want to marry gays, well, then the church shouldn't have to... but the state shouldn't have the authority to say no to a legal marriage between gays. It's not like we're in some kind of labor crunch where we can't find people to do the jobs or produce enough soldiers to fight a war or anything (as gay couples probably don't produce as many children on average, just guessing though). It just seems fundamentally wrong that one couple is given benefits that another couple can't receive, even though they are as much a couple as anyone.

That said, a class field trip to see a marriage doesn't sound like a good idea to me, but there is room for arguement there, the gay marriage is a current event of historic significance, probably not this particular teachers wedding, but gay weddings in general. A field trip over to an investment bank might have been a better way to spend their time and that's likely to be of more historic significance. Of course if gay marriage never really becomes legal, then the current issue of gay marriage won't be very historic, it'll just be forgotten (I am sure gay marriage will succeed eventually, likely within the next few years).

But for a more VJ centric view... what about gay marriage based imigration? My first instinct is oh #######, this would be a fraud floodgate, anyone could petition anyone man or woman... though maybe that'd only be true for people from countries that also allow gay marriages which I'm not sure if that's an issue anywhere else (I'm pretty sure that much of the middle east probably considers it punishable by death and might list that as one more reason to hate america... but maybe not?). I'm a little afraid of what gay imigration may mean to the whole process, especially since I'm pretty certain gay marriages will fully legalized and recognized at some point, I'm sure that imigration would follow... but that seems much more complicated.

And a final note, if the teacher and her wife are both totally hot, I'm completely in favor of this marriage and the field trip. Certain things are just that important... I think I'd better go look to see if I can find a video of their wedding kiss now... (just kidding about the last paragraph... mostly...)

That charter school is promoting people in Arts? Really? Goodluck getting a job in the future.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that since studying any kind of art helps develop brain activity and it doesn't necessarily mean that they will end up being artists, musicians and actors.

Take me for example, I majored in Theater and have an excellent job that I love in a great company. I also have several friends who are currently working actors in New York, some in Chicago and others in LA doing commercials, movies and T.V. So there's nothing wrong with promoting education in Arts at all.
