I would not worry a great deal about finding work or about an employeer's preference in regards to "bad habits' or not. Start out by taking whatever can be had, then from the inside find out what else there is and what better jobs there are.

But I'm not a nurse! My wife is the nurse! I'm in Marketing and Sales and have to start from scratch to get US experience. I'll take what can be had and find out what better jobs there are! :)

thank you so much for your replies. I'm just worried that ill be unemployed. are you aware of the nursing unemployment here in the phil? you know, the law of supply and demand. we have surplus of nurses and no demand at all. I heard that many were also taking up nursing in the u.s

my destination is in nevada. I didn't undergo agency coz my petition is family based.so I have zero nursing experience at all. agencies here bound to us require nurses to have 2 yrs experience before they will be petitioned by us employers. I know that I'm a bit lucky coz I don't have to go through agencies, spend a lot of money, etc. I m just praying that someday ill be a successful nurse in the us.

btw, I'm done with my interview and waiting for the visa to be delivered.

thanks agen!

Check out allnurses.com Then click on REGION, and United States, each State has its own forum, so you can go directly to the Nevada forum!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I am also an RN from the Philippines but didn't practice nursing the last 10 years of my life although I have 1 year experience working in the Genreral ward and 7 years of nursing experience in the Operating Room in the Philippines and abroad( meaning I am old, lol) . I shifted to another field in 1998 because the work has become so routine I had to do something else.

Anyhow, here in Florida, for foreign graduate nurses, one of the requirements by the Board of Nursing is a full course by course evaluation of the BSN degree we finished in the Philippines. I believe all states require the same. The most common agency authorized is CGFNS. Recently, foreign graduate nurses who want to be an RN here in Florida no longer need to take the english test, which I believe is great. I just started processing mine since it is very obvious that working in the medical field is the most in demand job around my area ( i live in a small town with 5,000 population, more or less). I am still waiting for PRC and my previous nursing school to finish filling up the forms from ERES ( also one of the agencies authorized by the FL Board of Nursing to do the evaluation) . I CANT take the NCLEX exam until my papers are evaluated and the ERES has submitted its report to the Board. Once the Board received that report then they will authorize me to take the NCLEX. With the authority to take the NCLEX it will also give me the right to work as a General Nurse ( under the supervision of an RN) in hospitals. I hope my evaluation will finish before the new year starts.

The evaluation itself is a long process so I decided to enrol myself in a two month course to be a CNA. It has ben 10 years and I believe this course will somehow re-introduce me to the field of nursing. I also need to review for the NCLEX which will take 4 months but with the CNA certification at least I can already work while reviewing.

It will be a year since my husband and I got married and I have fulfilled my promise not to work until after the first year of our wedding day because he wanted us to be together 24/7 to really get to know each other after only spending 2 weeks together in the Philippines before I arrived here.

I am excited to work again. This is by far the longest vacation I ever had. I go to school 3 times a week and will finish by December. The drive is 45 minutes each way but it only gives me more confidence driving by myself. There are 18 of us in the class and nobody knows, even the teacher, that I am an RN from the Philippines. The second day, we were taught how to take vital signs. It was a nice experience for me.

Yes, finding a nursing job in the Philippines is not as easy as before. I called a customer service and was rerouted to a call center in Manila and the representative is actually a nurse. She said no jobs for her in Manila so she opted working in a call center.

Nursing jobs here are everywhere so I believe this should not pose as a problem to someone who has a nursing degree , whether an RN or LPN/LVN ( they have to many titles here), as long as you meet the requirements by the Board of the state where you reside.

Goodluck
