Even MORE awesome.

I think that would be a silly move, considering America PURCHASED Alaska from Russia. Rather than simply giving it back, it should sell it back. I think that if America wanted to sell Alaska to the highest bidder (probably Russia or China - possibly Canada) and got 2 or 3 trillion dollars for it, it would be foolish not to sell. PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

money exchanged hands for texas too didn't it? :P

this happened in 1819.

the treaty settled a boundary dispute along the Sabine River in Texas and firmly established the boundary of U.S. territory and claims through the Rocky Mountains and west to the Pacific Ocean in exchange for the U.S. paying residents' claims against the Spanish government up to a total of $5,000,000 and relinquishing its own claims on parts of Texas west of the Sabine River and other Spanish areas.

That would be hilarious. Where, though, would Gov Palin state that she could then see Russia from?

Hardly. Most of Texas is west of the Sabine River. Sure, since Spain technically didn't ratify that treaty, and with Mexico becoming independent 2 years later... seems like a nice excuse to look for new expansionist horizons.

I'd like to see California secede and rejoin Mexico. That would kick ###.

That would take a civil war; plenty of us have no wish to be part of Mexico.

But what does that have to do with giving Alaska to Russia?

Besides which - paying money in the process of settling a boundary is NOT the same thing as purchasing the land outright. As I'm sure you know, Texas declared independence from Mexico, and sometime after that, Texas joined the U.S. It is quite the inaccurate statement to say that America purchased Texas from Mexico. Money may have changed hands, but it was hardly a purchase, by any stretch of the imagination.

Nevertheless, I think if Mexico wanted to buy Texas for $3T, plus the cost of a fence, the U.S. should sell it.

plenty of us have no wish to be part of Mexico.
Nevertheless, you are - one immigrant at a time (:

Well, the "Texans" weren't exactly Mexican citizens declaring independence (hint: gringos). So yeah, there IS a difference between Alaskan and Texan statehood/pseudo-independence.

The lesson from history is crystal clear. When you allow a foreign people to "peaceably" occupy your land, they will eventually take it over completely.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Not Hispanic, but I agree. And I wish California would secede and become the California Republic once again. Let the rest of the U.S. figure things out for themselves instead of holding this state back from economic and social progress.

You guys can't even balance your own budget - asking the Treasury Department for a $7,000,000,000 loan!

Edited: AJ beat me to it, as usual :P

wait, what? you mean the place that people brag about supposedly contributing more than the flyover states needs a bailout?
