New Car Market

If you're in a position to wait - I'd wait and see what deals come around the holidays - and even in to 2009 (especially on 2008 models) - Have a feeling dealers will be very motivated to move inventory. Deals will be there to be had - question will be financing.

Used Car Market

Now's a good time but am sure later this year they will get better - be on the look out for anyone wanting to get out from under a payment quickly.

My 2Cents...

Do you need a car?

Do you need the Infiniti G35?

Note: need vs want

Hubby wants it. He can live without it for now but will get it later anyway.

That is because they aren't willing to lend the cash or give the benefit of the doubt. If it's a newer infiniti, I'd say you are looking at shelling out some big buckos. It's a nice car but a luxury. If you can afford it than that's cool.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

We found a couple 2005 models with less then 40,000 miles under $17,000 when a month ago they were $21,000. That is not a bad price!

The financial experts are saying buy what you need, but avoid increasing your debt unless you think it necessary.

Well, if we will keep my car in the next 10,000 miles we will have to change timing belt, tires and a lot of other stuff because it is approahing 100,000 miles mark. Instead of dealing with all of that we can just sell it and buy a newer one. Payment are only going up $30 a month.

Be prepared to need quite a bit down. Several dealerships were talking in the range of 20% - 45% for a friggen Ford Escape Hybrid -- and immaculate credit.

Already have my bank financing.

Look at Consumer Reports magazine to see if the make and model year are recommended. Check the blue book value, too. Learn how to inspect a used car if you don't know how to.

Biggest depreciation in price takes place after the first years so a 2006 model is a relative bargain with less wear and tear.

Can always find good deals on vehicles, especially if you have cash, with a new car purchase, rather take the cash off than get 0% financing.

The way you do this, is to make payments, like you purchased the vehicle, but instead to a loan institution, to your own savings account, this way you are earning interest rather than paying for it, but get that cash back.

Changing a timing belt is no big deal, do that on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon instead of watching a football game and do it right replacing the idler pulley bearing and precisely setting the tension and timing, even replace all the bolts. Average cost of a new OE timing belt is less than 20 bucks, if you don't know how to do it, time to learn.

Really don't car much for 1996 or never vehicles with OBD II, was suppose to be a standard set by the EPA to make diagnostics easier, but went way backwards, requires a $6,000 scanner if you want full ABS and other accessory capability, sell cheap ones, but most are trash, requires esoteric software, can get it now due to a supreme court decision, but costs more than what your vehicle is worth.

Rarely pay higher than the trade in value for the vehicle, and prefer purchasing from a new car dealer, they get the best vehicles and dump the poor ones to used car dealers or at the auction, but rarely ever give even trade in value on a trade in. Helped my son buy a new vehicle, by not trading in his old vehicle, saved him $7,000.00 plus he got to keep his old vehicle. With a used vehicle, my dealers let me bring it home for three days so I can do my own inspecting before making the commitment.

Consumers Reports sucks, much better off to do a net search on a used vehicle to find the thousands of problems owners are having with a particular car. They also suck on so-called dealer prices, the only way a dealer could sell cars with that low of a markup would be to have a cash register checkout lane paying the clerk minimum wage with a car going out every 30 seconds.

Car prices are way out of line compared to even home appliances that at most doubled in price of the last 30 years, car prices have increased as much as a factor of ten, where many of the components today are of the throwaway kind, plus automated assembly, gas prices are unregulated, and no IRS deductions for using your vehicle to go to work or school, plus the EPA will not let you do any modifications, up to a $25,000 fine for even thinking about it, even if you know what you are doing.

A few months ago I was looking to buy a pick up truck. (Seems a BMW Z3 Sportster is not a good car when getting married)

I looked around at many used cars and found that I could get a brand new on for only a few thousand more. The deals I got was stunning. I had financing in place from the bank but the financing I got from Ford was even more great. I did have a huge down payment and great credit though. I even got them to throw in extras for free. They are very motivated now. Toyota was less motivated for sure but Ford seemed a steal. Check out everything new and used.

Even if papers say 0% financing there is no such thing. What is means is 0% APR but the real mesure of the loan is an Effective rate. To make sure you can multiply your monthly payment by the number of month you borrowed for. The amount you get will be higher then what you borrowed.

Well, I`m sure many people are capable of it but not me. All I know about car maintanance is when to take car for oil change and when to replace belt. Hubby won`t do it eather.

Well, our price range is $18,000. New cars we like are more expensive than that. I agree that it is better to buy from a dealer but we have pleasent experience buying from privat sellers.

This is when economy is normal. Right now people are not so eager to buy a car therefore prices are going down.
