Assuming you haven't already filed, now would be the best time to do it. Just fill out the I-485 and I-765 forms using her married last name. Just put her maiden name on the line that says other names used.

You can do it after she receives the green card, but you will have to pay about $190 (not sure on the exact figure) to get her name changed then. Essentially, you have to order her another green card.

Try doing a search on forums, there have been many topics on this.

As far as the time goes for the USCIS cashing the checks, there is no accurate figure. I would say for most people it happens within 1-2 weeks of them receiving your packet.

We sent in our paperwork for AOS and have just received notice for the interview and will receive the EAD in a couple of days. When would be the best time to do the name change?
