Hello

I have the Oath ceremony next week, I heard somewhere that after that we should go to Social Security and give the a copy of the naturalization certificate. Do I really have to do that? Is there anything else we need to update? I am assuming at the place we work we should update the file, instead green card, naturalization certificate. What else?

Thank you

Yes, SSA needs to be updated on all changes in status

YMMV

Wife's employer liked her certificate of naturalization, no longer have to keep track of when her green card expires.

In our state for driver's license renewal and for voter's registration, you just check the US Citizen box, didn't need that certificate.

DOS wants the original if you want a US passport, you just pray you get it back, our prayers were answered this time, must make a difference when two of you pray together.

SSA wants the original to make a copy of it, then gave it back, didn't like my colored copy, said they would have to check line by line, said I can help you with that, would take about five seconds, no deal. Then said, make sure your hands are clean before touching this certificate. Also reminded them what we are paying in FICA taxes that we may never get back. But said that with a smile on my face. You can also mail it in, but with SSA, may need an entire congregation to pray to get it back.

Think that is it, have it locked away now, probably won't need it again unless my wife gets drafted, Bush is getting desperate, first young girls, then middle aged women.

You are not legally required to notify social security. For that matter, you are not legally required to even have a social security number.

But if you DO choose to notify them, I would do it after you get your passport, and take them the passport. I wouldn't let them make a copy of my original certificate, too easy for them to mess it up. Passport is a lot more durable.

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

After my husband's oath ceremony (Sept. 23rd) there were tables set up for 1) voter registration, 2) social security, 3) passport. He did all three while there. Passport came a week later, voter registration card came 2 days ago, new ss card (same number of course) came yesterday. If you can do everything at the oath ceremony I recommend it, easy, efficient (in our case anyway), no hassleing with anybody afterward. Piece of cake! :)

Could you just show your certificate of naturalization to the DOS without sending it in? Too bad all field offices don't have that service, St. Paul sure doesn't.

They did take his certificate to send it in with the application for the passport. The certificate came back under separate cover from his passport and arrived the very next day after his passport arrived.

That`s awsome. I would do that too. Do I need to have in this case my passport picture already taken and bring it w/ me there in case or may be they even do that there. Anything in advance that I should I have to be able to obtain all that. Do they have the forms there?

Thank you

I have posted this info in VJ a few weeks ago..

Here is the guide after you took the OATH and became a naturalized citizen.

http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html explains it all, preferred using Adobe Acrobat for a nice printed copy, can get forms from the locales listed in this site, but dumped my typewriters a long time ago, they also tell you to print out single page, what a waste of paper, their forms are printed on both sides.

While her citizenship photos were still current did not read any restrictions on the passport photos regarding wearing earrings, so we had another photo session, but with earrings this time. Kind of funny, for her citizenship photos, she fixed her hair to hide her ears, that was okay. Think she is just a tad rebellious, she could wear earrings and even smile for her Venezuelan passport, but cannot smile for the good old USA. Something about inadequate biometrics software that gets all screwed up if you smile, but she had me take a couple of extra shots with her smiling for her own records.

Our photo sessions are fun, but have to take about 30 shots, I have the final choice on this in regards to meeting all the specifications after studying the DOS website on this subject. Size her face from chin to the top of her head exactly 1.375 inches on a 2 by 2" background, no shadows, pure white background, lay out 6 photos on a 4 by 6" format and pay Walgreens 19 cents for six photos. It's a fun project for me because I like looking at her face.

Ha, she didn't like all those blue lines they put on her face and questioned me again why she had to write out her full name on her passport book. What the heck, I said, as long as it works for them.

I have my ceremony on Friday Oct 17th. , 1.00 p.m. yeeeee!!!

I am planning same day to go to Social Sercurity and update my status. On Monday Oct 20th I am filing for passport , as soon as I get my passport and certificate back I am applying for my mom immigrants visa. Do you think any of this can be a problem? Like upplying to fast for my mom afetr I become citizen, can this be a problem? Or is it enough one day for SSN to update my file, would this interfere w/ applying for passport.

Thank you very much in advance for your advice
