I'm reviewing everything for my interview in a week and these questions popped in my head in regards to the DS-156K.

  • At the Consulate, when they ask for the DS-156K form, do I hand out only that form and they ask for the rest of the documents (birth certificate, police report, etc.) separately? Or do I hand out the form along with the documents listed on it?
  • Are the documents listed on the DS-156K only about me? In other words, do I include in there the divorce decrees of my fiance (US Citizen)?
  • When it says "evidence of engagement to your fiance(e)," is it only the letter of intent from him or do I also include pictures of us, chat logs and others? Oh and, do I need to prepare a letter of intent from me as well?
I just want to make sure I'm preparing my folders the right way so it doesn't look like a mess when the time comes to hand out everything.

When I was at the consulate, they asked for documents one-by-one. I made sure I had my accordian file organized so that all my documents were separated, along with copies of everything just in case. Also, the clerk takes your 156k and then in your interview they hand it back to you to sign in the interviewer's presence.

The interview in Montreal is all about you, so any documents are about you. However, I would have your fiance's divorce decree on hand as well. I can't remember if they asked for it, but we had it.

As far as evidence, if I were you I'd bring evidence but I wouldn't go overboard. I spent way too long organizing all that stuff and it never came up. As it turns out they rarely if ever ask for it.

I guess everyone has to decide individually how much they're comfortable bringing or leaving behind. To me, being prepared is better than the risk of not having something they want.

Thanks for the details, Gypsyangel. I'll prepare separate folders then. :)

My thoughts are exactly as yours, I prefer doing a little too much and not needing it rather than being asked for it and not having it. So far we've submitted only photocopies of documents so I'm bringing all the originals with me in case they want to see them.

    --> They will ask for each specific item. I also had a labelled accordian file and it helped me keep track of where it all was, the lady said I was very organized :)

  • Are the documents listed on the DS-156K only about me? In other words, do I include in there the divorce decrees of my fiance (US Citizen)?

    --> Sorry not sure on this item

  • When it says "evidence of engagement to your fiance(e)," is it only the letter of intent from him or do I also include pictures of us, chat logs and others? Oh and, do I need to prepare a letter of intent from me as well?

    --> Evidence of engagment would be everything from plane stubs, letter of intent, some photos, phone bills, chat logs, e-mails, ring receipt if you have one, etc. No need to go too overboard, they just want to see proof you are actually together and a real couple. Be sure the letter of intent is SIGNED!!

    Best of luck at the interview!!

I just want to make sure I'm preparing my folders the right way so it doesn't look like a mess when the time comes to hand out everything.

So far, my list for her to bring includes:

* Appointment letter (to get in)

* Passport (to get out)

* Xpresspost National Mailer prepaid and signature delivery required (since she can't use Regional for Ontario/Quebec)

* My updated Fiance letter of intent

* Medical results

* DS-156K (to be signed in presence of interviewer)

* Copy of I-129F packet (for any questions that may/may not be asked)

What originals does she need besides her birth certificate?

She will also need the following:

  • Affidavit of support with supporting documents
  • Photocopy of her passport
  • Two passport pictures
  • Police report
  • Evidence of engagement since you filed the petition (pictures, letters, emails, chat logs, etc.) - You don't need a lot but at least a few in case they ask to see them.
  • Plus originals of any documents you submitted in photocopy with the petition, also in case they ask to see them.
  • I don't remember if this is listed somewhere as being required, but I will also bring copies of the NOAs.
For all original documents she brings (like the birth certificate), make sure she also has a photocopy. My understanding is that they need to see the original but will keep the photocopy if you give one.

If anyone notices that I missed something, please let us know as we're getting ready and the day is close at hand! :)

Damn, wish I could have edited my above post. She does have:

* Two passport pictures

* Police report

* Affidavit of support

* Copy of NOA1 and NOA2

As far as evidence, we mostly have pictures in various places. As far as originals of documents, we aren't talking like my birth certificate correct?

I have my fiance's original birth certificate. I don't know that it'll be needed, but I have it in case since we had submitted a photocopy. I also have the original of his divorce decree.

Maybe someone who went through the interview can tell us if they're really needed.

Alright, so the final list should be:

* Affidavit of support w/ any supporting documents

* Photocopy of her passport information page

* Two standard passport pictures

* Police report/certificate

* Evidence of engagement since you filed the petition

* Originals of any documents submitted in photocopy with the petition

* Copies of the NOAs.

* Appointment letter

* Actual Passport

* Xpresspost National Mailer prepaid and signature delivery required

* Updated Fiance letter of intent

* Medical results

* DS-156K (to be signed in presence of interviewer)

* Copy of I-129F packet (for any questions that may/may not be asked)

I ask this because I've searched time and again for this list. No such comprehensive list exists in one location for K-1, or at least one that is "generally" confirmed by K-1 interviewees.

hi,

Good luck on your interview this week. I was wondering if there is a specific size of the Xpresspost National Mailer we need to get? what size did you get? does the size matter?

Thank you. :)

Yes, there is a specific size for the envelope. It has to be 314 mm x 394 mm.

Karen - The envelope you need is Xpresspost National Prepaid Envelope - Large size. Its on Canada Post's page, about 4th up from the bottom I believe. Just check the size against the appointment letter listed dimensions.

Note: If you live in Ontario or Quebec, the Xpresspost Regional Prepaid Envelope will suffice, otherwise, all other territories/provinces MUST use National.

Pandora - Yeah, she got that already and put it aside. Tempting to spend it though, she said :) It looks complete to me.
