Srvt. I have no idea why my reply didn't be seperate but it is in there. It is nice to know that you think you know me well enough to assume I do not know what it is like to be poor and live in a very depressed area.

Now to you it may seem unintelligent but to others they will understand. Why is it that most can raise above their surroundings and a few can't? It has to do with choices. Why can some families themselves have some that go on and become productive and another that becomes a drug addicted dreg on society? Those ones usually blame their circumstances but ignore their sibling that did well.

Not every family has an equal opportunity. If you seem to think they do, then you've far more stuck in your own head and outside of reality than one can imagine. Indeed your responses do elicit that you don't know what it's like not only to be poor, but to be in the situation they are in, plus poor. You've proven yourself to be an idealist on many things. This is just another one. Idealism has no place in the real world.

So says you but you have shown by what you typed that you have little clue about me. I am proud of what I achieved in life when I was told I would never be able to. I probably have more experience than you and many about being poor or handicapped and rising above that. Of course since it doesn't fit with your idealism then my ideals have to be wrong.

Now one can cry and moan all they want but to me they will fall on deaf ears. I applaud any that do well especially if they come from disadvantages. Now most of the ones that came over in that program that the article was talking about did do that and I think they deserve a pat on the back and a attaboy. The ones that are crying deserve nothing.

People who have been in such situations don't show the sort of disconnect and up-on-one's-pedestal attitude you've portrayed toward other people you have little clue about. I'm sure they'd love to hear your idealism about their situation, rather than some sort of compromise from someone who actually listens.

As before since it seems you have a blockage that is preventing you from understanding. I know more than most what it is like to rise above crushing circumstances. I can be on the side of the ones that also do so because of this. I admire them because I know what it is like. It takes a lot of extra effort that some can't or won't do.

I prefer to help the majority that saw fit to do what it took to be a citizen. They came from the same disadvantages as these loafers but yet somehow did what was required and made it. I applaud them.

To be fair to luckytxn.. i had cause to learn spanish whilst living in Spain...I had to learn it via the people I worked with - colleagues taught me spanish I helped them with their english.

Personally I always thought the "american dream" was all about people being able to lift themselves from extreme situations and suceed. despite poverty, discrimination etc... in fact, a lot of high profile people can attest to struggles of all kinds.

One thing I was always taught by a wise grand parent - if you want it bad enough you will work until you get it.

You try to make it seem like you have a clue, make this nice insinuation about admiration, then you once again threw all your credibility away by calling people who work 2 and 3 jobs, "loafers". You really do have a disconnect, and every post you make only further shows it. You may be able to lie to yourself and maybe to others here, but as someone who grew up around people like this, you're not fooling me one bit.

Let me show where you are disconnecting Srvt and then come back and try again. In the article it never said they were working 2 to 3 jobs. Another poster suggested maybe that was why they never learned English. Many immigrants learn English so they can get better paying jobs. In the article it said the program broght in about 25.000 Ameriasians. This group and estimated about a few hundreds needed this legislation. The others and I know a few that did come over in the program did what was needed and rose up and are now doing well here.

Now if anyone is working 2-3 jobs and has a brain deformity that precludes them from learning English to better themselves than maybe we can talk but in this case these were the few that did not even try but found the easy way out and self medicated their sorrow or joined Gangs.

Now read again and nowhere does it say they were working 2-3 jobs and read the posters and find where someone else said it. You are getting confused. That is ok though some idealists can't see past their own wrong logic.

You hit it on the nail Truffles. I am old fashioned I guess and think also that the American dream is earned and not given away. I was raised to work hard and earn my way through life. This country has a long history of immigrants that came here and through hard work and perseverance made it. It has always been one of the things that has made this country great. We have become affluent here and have so much that we lose sight of what got us to this point.

Question -- did you get all your experience in these areas reading articles? Keep digging the hole deeper. :)

After five unsuccessful chances, you've shown that your experience is quite accurately what you read in newspapers. At this point the argument has run it's course.

See you will never understand. I gave you the clues but despite it you don't even try. That is ok I know and anyone else reading knows where you went wrong and we will just laugh at you.

Haha. Yeah because I need to read newspapers to bother paying attention to what went on around me?

Fail.

Anyways, good luck with the papers.

Few have a clue what these people have went through. Speaking English is NOT a requirement for a child of an American serviceman. This is just another example of our countries failure to take responsibility for our actions in Viet Nam.

There's a movie called "The Beautiful Country" that is about a bui doi man who makes it to America to look for his father:

Thanks for the post Steven.
