Sometimes it takes a Texan to tell it like it is - even if it is Molly Ivins:

http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/200603...mmigration_101/

I tell this story to make the one single point about the border and immigration we know to be true: The Fence will not work. No fence will work. The Great darn Wall of China will not work. Do not build a fence. It will not work. They will come anyway. Over, under or through.

Some of you think a fence will work because Israel has one. Israel is a very small country. Anyone who says a fence can fix this problem is a demagogue and an ###.

The initial mystery that attends any journey is: how did the traveller reach his starting point in the first place?

Actually, it doesn't even work in Israel.

True enough, yes. Israel is well-known as a haven of peace and tranquility...

even the threat of being shot to death did not stop those people from fleeing over the Berlin Wall.

The point of it all is that it may not stop some of those people from coming over but it sure will slow down the majority. Combining the wall with stronger enforcement of the immigration laws in the interior and then maybe we can start having something close to a positive impact.

The real issue is that the USA can have all the illegal immigrants it's prepared to pay for. But Mexicans aren't stupid - if there were no jobs, they wouldn't risk their lives (in some cases) crossing the border. The sensible thing to do would be to go after the employers who make it worthwhile.

Fence? A white elephant, designed to give the illusion that something is being done. Much simpler than actually solving a problem that no-one in power really wants to solve in any case.

Boy, you both hit the nail on the head here...both about the employers, and the fence deal. Had German for 7 years in school, and saw videos of people trying to get over the wall,etc..it was so sad. Nothing physical is going to stop them, that's for sure. M.

People will risk their lives for what they see as a better opportunity for their children... so no, no fence is going to stop them - if a couple of hundred (or so) miles of desert doesn't make them reconsider, a fence is a minor obstacle.

Plus, I believe a study was done that determined the vast majority of illegal immigrants get here legally to start out. Which makes sense, get in as a tourist, student, VWP, temp. worker or whatever then never leave.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
