to the OP:

The nearest Halal grocery to us right now is about 50 miles. Once every month or two we go and totally stock up the freezer. I find, like AJ, that the meat is actually usually cheaper and fresher than the local grocery stores. Its not been a big deal at all, we just make a day of it and do some other shopping and have lunch out, etc. Then we buy our fish from the local stores. and we DO eat a lot of seafood, more than I did before my husband got here but thats fine because we love it.

holidays that we spend with my family we go in advance and buy Halal meat. A couple of years ago I ordered a halal turkey and had it delivered to my parents house the week before Thanksgiving so they could cook it for the family meal. My dad ranted and raved that it was the best turkey he had ever eaten and there's never been an issue. I guess it helps that my sister is married to a Hindu vegetarian so our family is not unfamiliar with making special arrangements. But in any case, my point is that all of this is not that big of a deal. Certainly not worth fighting about for 3 years, at least in my opinion. Just one of the many adjustments that come with marriage :)

i think its the same . the nearest one maybe is about 50 miles from her home .

this is awesome i hope if we can do the same !!!!!!!. i told her about that idea

Nothing's impossible . Nothing's unreachable .When I am weary you make me stronger

This love is beautiful .So unforgettable . I feel no winter cold when we are together .

Will you stand by me ?!!!Hold on and never let me go .

Will you stand by me?!! With you i know i belong . When the story gets told .

When day turns into night .I look into your eyes . I see my future now .All the world and its wonder

This love wont fade away. And through the hardest days . I will never question us .You are the reason my only reason.

I'm blessed to find what i need in a world loosing hope. you are my only believe .

You make things right every time after time.....

Will you stand by me ?!!!

I love you so much and i miss you so much more .

Yes, some (especially high percentage of "supermarket-specific" brand ones) yoghurts do contain gelatin--which wrecks it texture-wise so it is FUBAR :P

Well, I had no idea. Thanks for educating me on this. :) Thankfully for me, I'm lactose intolerant so yoghurts and cheeses are off my food list and I don't think I'll even bother looking whether either cheeses or yoghurts are kosher or not once I move over to the USA

I thought that all things kosher are also halal, but all things halal are not necessarily kosher. I might be mistaken though.

Hmmm, yes, I am wrong:

Islam prohibits all intoxicating alcohols, liquors, wines and drugs. kashrut regards all wines kosher. Hence food items and drinks showing the kosher symbol containing alcohol are not halal.

Gelatin is considered Kosher by many Jews regardless of its source of origin. If the gelatin is prepared from non-zabiha, Muslims consider it haram (prohibited). Hence foods items such as marshmallows, yogurt, etc., showing kosher symbols are not always halal.

Enzymes (irrespective of their sources even from non-kosher animals) in cheese making are considered mere secretion(pirsah b'almah) according to some kashrut organizations, hence all cheeses are considered kosher. Muslims look for the source of the enzyme in cheese making. If it is coming from the swine, it is considered haram(forbidden). Hence cheeses showing kosher symbols may not be halal....

Jenn,

I'm not sure what your source of the quoted information is, but it is completely wrong!!!

Firstly, not all wines are kosher, only the ones made by or under the supervision of an orthodox Jew are considered kosher. I'm not sure what additives are allowed but they are strictly controlled and enforced as we use wines for our blessings.

Secondly, gelatine cannot be kosher if it comes from non-kosher animal and that means that even if the animal is kosher by the biblical definition, unless is slaughtered in a proper way, any products from that animal cannot be kosher. Most of our gelatine comes from a fish source. Marshmallows, because of the gelatine, have to have a kosher certificate before one is allowed to eat them. I'm not aware that any gelatine goes into yoghurts at all.... New one to me...

Similarly, cheese production is strictly regulated and no cheese is allowed to be consumed unless it's certified. The reason is that the rennet, which is used in cheese production, can come from non-kosher source and as such only cheeses that can pass the kosher certification that only kosher animal rennet had been used can be approved.

Any additives, enzymes, E-numbers and other food preservatives are very strictly regulated and I can assure you that anything coming from non-kosher animal would not be certified. For example, red M&M's made them non kosher (at least in Europe) because the red colour comes from a Cochineal beetle!

Um, for what it's worth (vegetarian here) -- gelatin in the US is specified as kosher if it is. This comes from fish sources. Non-kosher gelatin comes from animal sources. Gelatin is a huge ingredient there. Almost all yogurts, gummy-candy, Skittles...it's used as a thickening agent in a lot of boxed foods and soups.

Many hard cheeses contain rennet; soft cheeses mostly use vinegar as the curdling agent. Most cheap/store-brand/low quality cheeses actually use an artificial rennet that is grown in a lab.

Red M&Ms in the states don't contain bug dye. However, always look for carmine or carminic acid, both of which are bug-derived. Red #40 is NOT derived from any animal or insect.

Just remember to read the back of the box! I've been vegetarian for over twelve years now and reading the back of the box is second-nature to me.

I dont live in NYC, and there are at least 3 places 15-20 minutes from my house that sell halal meat. I dont think of Louisville as a huge metro city, but here we are with all these markets :) Lucky us, I guess

My husband and I talked about holidays and how to deal with them a long time ago. Instead of just bringing a side dish as usual on holidays, I will bring a large entree and he can eat that, while everyone else can have some also. This will save the akwardness of "no he isnt going to eat the food you cooked" heh

I dont think it is rude AT ALL if your husband does not want to eat non halal meat cooked outside your home. If he feels that strongly about it, it must be very important to him, and maybe you guys can find a way to make it easier for you both. Either buy a deep freezer and stock up on those 2 hour drives or cook veggie meals maybe? :)

Will he not eat ANY meal outside or only meat dishes?

The halal stores around me arent that much more expensive at all than the grocery store, btw

Take care and I hope you guys can find a solution

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

I think you two need to talk about this in private rather than on a message board.

Very wise advice. Thank you

100% agree espc when it comes to religion cause religion always causes problems .

but if you check her profile you will find out that she just come to VJ to ask people about religion which i don't like . and its my first time to add comment in public .

she brings up religion because she is trying to learn since it is such a big part of ur lives. she is not meaning anything bad by it. but when its all muslims can focus on....well she has to focus on it too. she is just trying to do right by u.
