Here my 2 cents from my own experience:

I used to eat meat from the supermarket. If you look hard enough, you'll find fatwas that say that's ok.

However, when I started to look deeper into the issue, I just couldn't justify it to myself. There are 2 basic requirements for meat to be considered a-ok:

1. Killed by a cut to the throat, not a jolt of electricity or a bolt to the head

2. Slaughtered by a Muslim, Jew or Christian

If it's slaughtered by a muslim, then you're good to go. If it's done by a christian or a jew, then you say bismillah before you eat it.

Meat from the supermarket definately does not meet the first requirement. And you have no idea if it meets the second. You can't go up to the meat counter and say "excuse me, could you tell me the religion of the preson who slaughtered this package of ground beef?"

As such, I don't eat meat that my parents serve. And when I go out to restaurants, I eat vegetarian or fish (so red lobster is a-ok so long as you don't get something cooked in alcohol). I explain it that it's like keeping kosher, that it's nothing personal, and that I looooove the vegetables that they made.

If this is a sincerely held religious belief, why would you ask your loved one to compromise it?

Here is what the muslim should do in this situation if getting halal meat is expensive/difficult:

*look for a kosher option. Some groccery stores sell kosher hotdogs and the like

*eat more fish

*get used to eating less meat.

If you can only make the trip to get halal meat once every few months, bring a cooler along, stock up, and then ration it. You can't have meat every night in these situations. Maybe you'll only have it once a week. Start looking at the "fake meat" like morningstar and boca.

isn't halal meat similar to kosher meat? I guess that'd be a viable option..

and pardon my ignorance.. but, can you then just eat a Mcdonalds cheezburger and say bismallah? and its cool?

Just a little sidenote:

My husband's boss is an orthodox jew who keeps kosher. We've invited him and his wife over for dinner. They've refused. Why? Because the strict rules of the kosher they keep dictate that they cannot eat food from a pan that has cooked both dairy and meat.

Ok, no problem. We'll just go out to dinner at a local kosher restaurant. All's well that ends well. :star:

I'm no Muslim but I do like my meat. I'd rather cut my tongue off with a dull knife that eat that #######.

To each their own.

I've seen some very dodgy Halal stuff in NYC - guys pulling up outside of Manhattan cafes in the morning and unloading meat in plastic bin-liners from the back of a passenger sedan...

We used to buy halal meat sometimes, but my husband now realizes that they jack up the prices and usually do not work in the most sanitary of conditions at many of the halal markets, unfortunately.

That's what puts me off - though its more the "street meat" places that bother me.

We buy all our meat halal, not because we care about it being halal but because a halal meat store in Iselin is where we've found the best prices and frankly better taste, than mainstream groceries.

im glad she finally came here to post and talk because its usually him, it is possible for a house to have two different opinions and both survive. You can eat the pork he chooses not to, hopefully you can find his meat, if not, then he chooses not to eat meat...or eats what is avail. Holidays, if you can find it avail you (or him) can cook and take some for all to experience. I doubt any family at say Thanksgiving would look badly upon someone bringing a extra dish, if they dont want to try it again everyone has a choice.

At Thanksgiving here my daughter makes a stuffing with sausage i would just ask her to make one dish without and be sure to advise him of the ingredients. He can eat turkey or choose to eat whatever, whose going to be watching.

Really if your fighting about food for 3 years, maybe both better take few steps back there will be alot more things important and probably alot more important than food ahead.

There's a chain of low-price hispanic supermarkets out where I am, I go in there from time to time to buy milk but the place stinks to high heaven. They have some sort of on-site butchers there - its really is nasty.
