I normally put all things for gifts, etc. in my checked baggage and that is it. I have never had my baggage checked, never been checked myself and never had a question asked at Ukrainian customs. I have flown there dozens of times, to Odessa, Donetsk and Kiev and never had a question asked anywhere at any time. I have always just handed over my passport, said "Zdrastvootye", and that was it. I pick up my bag and head out the door. I have never used the so called "VIP" service. I have brought all types of clothes, jewelry, perfume, laptop computers (2), electronic items of various sorts, cameras, chocolate, maybe 15 gallons of Maple Syrup (not all in one trip but as much as 2 gallons at a time) Teddy bears, including one I should have had to buy a plane ticket for (it was that big) etc., etc.

My advice? Back your bags and don't worry about it. If you must, put the ring in a small box or container with some other small items of jewelry and let it go. Even if they check it, if it isn't wrapped up in a gift box, what would they say?
