i admit i haven't read this thread, i'm just watching the debate online now. does anyone else get really irritated when they hear things like this?

mccain: "America is the greatest force for good in the history of the world. My friends, we have gone to all four corners of the Earth and shed American blood in defense, usually, of somebody else's freedom and our own."

That doesn't irritate me.

i'm failing to see what's so irritating about it.

Ahem, Senator McCain... Barack Obama is "The One," not "That one"

This one and that one shake hands.During last night's debate, John McCain referred to Barack Obama as "that one." That one what?

Can we skip the next debate and hold the election the first Tuesday of next week? It's time to put this POW horse out of its misery. John McCain used to crash planes and bang strippers, and now he's wandering around the stage, looking for his car keys. A lifetime in politics, obliterated at the very end by Steve Schmidt and that Palin creature. Asking himself what kind of country prefers a black guy with a name as Arabic as Mohammed Atta's to a decorated war hero.

John, it this really how you want to go out? Calling Obama a terrorist behind his back and a "one" to his face? You've come this far without snapping, but you're turning into Grandpa at Christmas dinner. You don't like how any of the grandkids turned out, your dentures hurt and you're two scotches away from calling Grandma a #######.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Oh yeah Paul Daniels, you said it.

It was gnawing at me...the whole Julius Caesar feeling, every time McCain spoke.

Thanks.

:star:

And Almaty, perhaps McCain needs to watch The Matrix again.

Hee, hee.

well, i'm irrirated by constantly hearing america is the best at this and that when it isn't. i like it here better than my own country so don't take this as an attack on the states, but i don't think that the usa produces the best cars, bread or has the best healthcare system as mccain proclaimed. ( doctors, yes, healthcare system, no :P )

seriously though, i'm wondering what good the war in afghanistan was/is? i know that my country has as much to play in that as the states, but i don't see brits going around saying that they think we're the greatest force for good in the history of the world... that's a pretty wild statement and it rubs me up the wrong way. :( maybe mccain can say that because he's old enough to remember the entire history of the world?

I think what he means is that it can be insulting... a suggestion that if you question your government or don't support them 100% you aren't being patriotic (e.g. Bush's "if you aren't with me you are against me" statement). Many republicans wrongly associate supporting the Iraq war with patriotism & personally I find that to be offensive & insulting to my intelligence.

I have 21 years of service in the Army & served in Bosnia and Iraq, so I think I have a pretty good idea what patriotism means. You can support our troops, love our country AND disagree with our government all at the same time.

Its just the usual round of "pump me up" rhetoric.

Not unlike "The US' healthcare system is the envy of the world*"

McCain didn't say that, did he?!

that must have been during the part i dozed off...
