Oh but he does, the American people can solve all Americas problems, my friends, because the American people are the best people in the world, and no problem is to big, or too small, for the American people to solve. So, vote for me, and let the American people run America.

That sums it up quite nicely

i admit i haven't read this thread, i'm just watching the debate online now. does anyone else get really irritated when they hear things like this?

mccain: "America is the greatest force for good in the history of the world. My friends, we have gone to all four corners of the Earth and shed American blood in defense, usually, of somebody else's freedom and our own."

i'm failing to see what's so irritating about it.

I think what he means is that it can be insulting... a suggestion that if you question your government or don't support them 100% you aren't being patriotic (e.g. Bush's "if you aren't with me you are against me" statement). Many republicans wrongly associate supporting the Iraq war with patriotism & personally I find that to be offensive & insulting to my intelligence.

I have 21 years of service in the Army & served in Bosnia and Iraq, so I think I have a pretty good idea what patriotism means. You can support our troops, love our country AND disagree with our government all at the same time.

Thank you!

 It's just a platitude designed to make the heart swell. Every time one hears the word "American" a tear comes to the eye, the hand goes over the heart and we recite the pledge of allegiance. This country needs YOU! (Insert McCain/Palin here)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I didn't think there was any difference between Obama and McCain on the illegal immigrant issue...

It doesn't seem to be an issue that the campaigns are really addressing.

Yea, immigration has dropped off the radar since the economy went down the toilet.

Not surprising really.

Not at all. The focus needs to be on the economy.

nowhere near it.

what i have issue with is this:

"we have gone to all four corners of the Earth and shed American blood in defense, usually, of somebody else's freedom and our own."

i don't see what the problem is with that statement. it's quite true imo.

Charles there's nothing wrong with being patriotic and loving ourcountry... it is the best in the world. However the McCain campaign trys to make it appear like he's more patriotic than Obama... by extension the republicans have done this too. Again I find some of his comments to be insulting to my intelligence & inappropriate... because McCain is a vet and a former POW he should know better than to use patriotism as a gimmick. It plays like that movie "America's Team World Police" but without the humor.

McCain does the same thing when he says our workforce is the best in the world... instead of trying to actually fix the problem he's trying to play on people's emotions. People want solutions, not some contrived BS about mom, apple pie & Chevrolet.

i fail to see how that's related to my reply. if you want a soapbox, feel free.

It completely relates... you take the quote at face value & after hearing McCain and Palin speak numerous times I know what he's really trying to do. There's nothing wrong with the statement at face value, I just see the bigger picture that's all.
