The fun times of the SSA

I took Rob to SSA on Friday to apply for his social security card. We took all the papers the guide says to bring and thank god we did...2 of the people there (the guy at the window we were called to and a woman he asked) did not know that K-1 visas could get an SSN without work authorization. We stood there for like 10 minutes while both of them read through the "official handbook" on the computer which was the same information I had printed out at work the day before and was trying to show him. Finally the woman said "K1s don't need it, it's K2s that do" so he went ahead and processed everything.

Then he asked about Rob's middle name...it's not on his passport OR his visa even though we put it on every bit of paperwork where it was asked. The guy told us that in the future there could be problems because his middle name isn't on either of those 2 documents but it will be on his SSN card. Could this be true? Has anyone had problems with this at all? And does anyone know if they will put his middle name on his Greencard?

Yes if you put a middle name on the application. That will appear on the social security card. Not sure about the green card as I don't have that yet. But they did put my initial on the EAD/AP.

Would you think there's bound to be any problems because his visa/passport dont have his middle name and the social security card does? Cause that's what the guy at SSA told us when he handed Rob the thing he printed out after he'd entered everything in the computer.

I don't see any problem as long as he uses the name as it appears on the SSN record.

The employer should record the name shown on the SSN card in business' personnel and payroll records that will be used to prepare W-2 reports.

The records used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to verify taxpayer name and SSN information are created from Social Security Administration (SSA) data and the IRS may reject a tax return if the information submitted on the return does not match SSA records.

SSA also has agreements with most states to verify the SSN, date of birth and name information provided by individuals applying for driver's licenses and the information is checked against the individual’s SSN record.
