Thanksgiving in both Canada and the US is tied to giving thanks for our bountiful harvest...which coincides with early October, I think. Unless you live in some kind of hot climate, most people have already harvested by the end of November. No idea how they came to pick that date, other than they wanted to not have two "holidays" in October.

I'm not to familiar with harvesting times, but I was under the impression that is why the Americans have their thanksgiving in November. A farmer in Ontario surely doesn't do their harvest the same time as a farmer in Virginia, does he? Someone inform me!

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

I just did a quick bit of research and it appears from historical records that American Thanksgiving is more tied to thanking God for the safety of its people and a new nation and government than with the actual end of harvest.

It hurts me, emotionally, to make a Thanksgiving dinner when I am so far from my family. (Because everyone used to come to my house.) I probably will not go out of my way to recognize Canadian Thanksgiving this year. :(

Oh my goodness, I had the same reaction form my new family when I served turnip with a pot roast - not a vegetable that is common with my familoy here. Yes, a relish try will be on my table. I went to Ross and picked up at small four-section one in the discount section (all my stuff is packed away in Canada for when I eventually get here).

Happy week-end everyone.

Yes...those compartmentalized food plates! We would have several on Thanksgiving, with some types of chutney, sweet gerkins, olives, maybe some dills, or pickled pearl onions.

Yes, I don't know that anyone I've met here has eaten a turnip. :hehe:

I don't really eat turnips, for no particular reason, funny thing is my Mom really likes them, but I don't remember ever eating them as a child.

So is Columbus day a real holiday or a faux holiday here?

When my grandpa was on his last leg in the hospital, they brought in his dinner and it was beef and turnips. And his face when my mom opened the tray: "TURNIPS!? I HATE TURNIPS!" he said it like a child and it was so funny! It got us all laughing in a time where we were all so sad.

My mom said: "No dad, you love turnips!" and she tried to feed him and he closed his mouth tight and shook his head "No!"

He did love turnips but I guess his taste changed due to the brain tumors. It was probably the last time we all laughed together with him. :)

Clarification! :hehe:

People get a day off work = real holiday

People get to shop at sales, but they don't get the day off work = faux holiday
