I did a stuffed turkey breast last year. It was good.

I haven't decided yet if I will do it again this weekend.

I will- I just talked to Mel and we will invite some peeps over on Sunday.

Nothing official here, although I may pick up a turkey breast or something similar.

I'm making the traditional Thanksgiving dinner that I watched my mom do for many years. I still use her recipe for the stuffing, make mashed potatoes and mashed turnip. If they are really lucky, I'll make an apply pie for dessert. We're having our dinner on Monday.

It's going to feel strange not having my family around for the afternoon / evening.

I'm the same way. Just like mom made! :)

That's what I love when I cook and one of the few things that my mom and I have to share...she taught me how to cook, and cook well. I was always closer to my dad, so it's nice to think of mom when I do make a nice dinner (like turkey! :D )

No traditional Thanksgiving dinner for the Canadian thanksgiving this year. That's because we'll be having our big dinner on Saturday at our wedding. I'm pretty sure that we'll go to a nice restaurant on Sunday and probably Monday. I'd love to cook the traditional dinner, but alas, it's hard to hold 20 people in a small little two bedroom apartment!

My boyfriend & I are going to my parent's place this weekend, having turkey dinner on Sunday. I actually prefer chicken, but we only have turkey once or twice a year, plus, I'm not making it so I shouldn't complain!

Gonna be nice to go home after being away for 6 weeks. Looking forward to the family get-together/dinner.

Hope everyone enjoys their weekend...whoever they spend it with :)

Yes, we are with friends and stepson and his guest. Full sit down traditional Canadian meal - no greens, cornbread, potato salad, dirty rice, macaroni and cheese or sweet potato pie. We will do all that at American Thanksgiving. What ever you are all doing enjoy the day!

I think some of the novelty has worn off having two Thanksgivings. I buy a turkey breast tenderloin about once a month, so we have turkey often. Last year I think I had a turkey burger at Red Robin. Gene's Mom has a lovely Thanksgiving in November with pretty much all the fixings that I would have, except a few "American" touches. Neither Gene nor I have family close by. I think we'll just enjoy the dinner in November this year.

Hi Everyone,

To all you Canadians:

"Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!!" (October 13, 2008)

To all you Americans:

"Happy Columbus Day!!" (October 13, 2008) (By the way, who celebrates that here anyways?)

"Happy American Thanksgiving!!" (November 27, 2008)

To all you Canadian-Americans/American-Canadians:

"Happy October and November Thanksgivings!!"

Lol...yes, it's confusing to have 2 Thanksgivings. But at the same time, think of it as, "Double the celebrating, and double the turkey..yum!" (Oh, and maybe double the weight gain... )

Funny, I remember when we were back in Canada, my boyfriend (now husband) and I used to celebrate "Canadian Thanksgiving", with the both of us together. Now that we are in America, my husband and I just celebrated "American Thanksgiving", with the rest of our extended family here.

Hmmm...maybe this year I'll "celebrate" "Canadian Thanksgiving" again this weekend in "America", with a dinner of leftover defrosted turkey ham that I still have in the freezer (if it hasn't gone bad by now). Now I have a reason to eat that turkey ham that I got on sale weeks ago, but couldn't bear to eat unless it was for a special occasion (ok, I shouldn't be so sentimental about food...lol...)! Thanks for the reminder about the turkey in the freezer that I still have, everyone!...

Personally though, I prefer having Thanksgiving in October or maybe September, as having Thanksgiving in November is too close to the Christmas/Holiday season. Also, I see Thanksgiving as more of a Fall/Autumn type of a festival, which is more appropriate for celebrating in September or October. Yup, so the Canadians have it more accurately in terms of when to celebrate Thanksgiving!

As for Boxing Day in Canada, it makes no sense to me either, kind of like how Columbus Day makes no sense to me either in the USA. Oh well, holidays don't really need to make much sense, as having a holiday for any reason at all, is good enough for everyone, right?

Ant (Wishing Everyone "Happy Thanksgiving!!!"...)

P.S. Speaking of Thanksgiving and the Holiday season, I was wondering: Do any of you in Canada still watch the "Santa Claus Parade" on tv? It's kind of like the Canadian version of the "Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade", though a lot more better, in my opinion.

It hurts me, emotionally, to make a Thanksgiving dinner when I am so far from my family. (Because everyone used to come to my house.) I probably will not go out of my way to recognize Canadian Thanksgiving this year. :(

<<<<<<<HUGSS>>>>>>>>

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Thanksgiving in both Canada and the US is tied to giving thanks for our bountiful harvest...which coincides with early October, I think. Unless you live in some kind of hot climate, most people have already harvested by the end of November. No idea how they came to pick that date, other than they wanted to not have two "holidays" in October.

What are the traditional Canadian fixings? My ex-wife's best friend is Canadian and we celebrated both thanksgivings with them but for the life if me I can't recall what we had other than turkey. It was my job to just show up, eat, and stay the hell out of the kitchen.

Thanks,

Phil

Maybe what's traditional in the East, isn't traditional in the west? I don't know!

We would have turkey, dressing (typically made from bread cubes, onions, sage, celery) I think that might be different than the US dressing. We'd have gravy. What we wouldn't have is that green bean casserole or sweet potato casserole with marshmallows. We'd have (now when I say "we", I mean my friends and family) perhaps cooked carrots with maple syrup, mashed turnip (sometimes turnip and carrots mashed), there would be the obligatory jello salads... , marshmallow salad, mashed potatoes. Mmmmmmmmm fresh buns. We often just made bannock. A relish tray. Does anyone know what a relish tray is? Cranberry sauce of course. Pumpkin pie of course, maybe minced tarts, apple pie, baked Indian pudding.

That's what we had anyway. I had my turkey many years done in -30 weather on my rotisseraire on my gas grill. Oft times, it wasn't what we had, it was the sharing it with family, all the snacking done before the meal.... We often ate "early", like 1 pm. By 7 pm everyone was getting hungry again, and out would come leftovers...the BEST leftovers mmmmmmm, and we'd have turkey sammies with mayo etc. etc. ....

Okay...enough! I'm starved! *off to eat some lunch*
