POE and your x-ray picture

I was wondering about the x-ray picture and POE. For those who have been through it, you might have some advice or info on this subject.

Did you carry your x-ray with you when you went to the US the first time after receiving your Visa, and where did you carry it?? stuffed in your carry-on??? if so, what happened when you were getting ready to put the carry-on on to the x-ray machine they have at the airport, doesn't that mess up the x-ray you have?

I'm asking because I went to my interview *DFC* in Copenhagen, and they made me put everything to go through their x-ray machine, the guy then saw my big envelope and asked me if that was my chest x-ray, I said "yes" and he told me that I could not put that through their x-ray machine, so I had to take it out and carry it with me through the metal detector instead...........sorry for the long rant, I'm just curious to know what you guys did. Did you take the envelope out every time you had to pass an x-ray machine and tell them what it is - or what did you do???

Back in 2002 when I came over, I stuck mine into my suitcase that was being checked in. It was never ever required on this side (U.S.) and now sits on a shelf on the top of my closet.

yeah, mine was in my carry-on because we're told at the consulate interview to take it with us, but then no one ever asks for it once we're here.

Mine's been sitting on top of my dresser since I got here, waiting for me to find the perfect back-lit frame for it

Just put it in your carry on, no worries.

Thank you for your quick replies.

If you put it in your carry-on, doesn't the x-ray machine at the airport damage your x-ray ????

Yea, I was told that I had to take "really good care" of my chest x-ray since it's very important and I have to show it at POE..... for sure I will take good care of it, I paid around $100 for the darn thing :P

But your x-ray is fine, right?? no damages, no nothing?? :)

no one ever said anything about it going thru the x-ray machine at all. I haven't really looked at it since I got here, there's been no reason to.

Seriously, anyone whose ever asked a POE agent why we're told to bring it with us has said "dunno, we're not doctors so even if we did look at it, we wouldn't know what we're lookin' at"

I wouldn't worry about it. how could an x-ray machine damage an x-ray?

The X-ray machines don't really damage film or X-rays anymore, I don't think. I've had camera's with film go through that have come out perfectly fine.

I also packed my X-ray in my checked in suitcase, since that's what the consulate officer who interviewed me said to do with it, since I'd carried it to my interview.

The results of the X-ray are included in your medical report. None of the POE officers are doctors, so none of them will know what your X-ray shows anyway.

I'm not too sure where my X-rays are, they're around here somewhere, though.

So, there's a bunch of people in the US that has x-ray of their own chest in the closet or hanging on the wall..... LOL, that's a funny thought :D

I thought about just stuffing it in my carry-on, I never heard of anyone looking at the x-ray at POE anyways. If so, why do they make such a big fuss out of making sure to let you know that you under no circumstances are allowed to open the envelope and check it out for ourself :P I had no problem with my medical, so I'm not worried, just had to figure out where to put it by that time :)

How about gadgets, such as MP3, MP4 players, PSP, digicam and such.... is it safe to let them go through the x-ray machine at airports  I know, it might be obvious to some... but not me :( I never travelled with gadgets before, or laptops... so I have no clue. I dont want my stuff to get damaged :(

I always have my iPod, digital camera, cell phones and laptop go through the scanners at the security checks for carry ons and have never had a problem with any of those items. They usually make you take your laptop out of the bag and put it in one of the plastic containers the rest of the items I leave in my carry on bag.

Hello,

I got here last May 20 through LAX. I packed my X-ray with my check in luggage. I was ushered to a room and it was only me who was there. I was not asked any question and 5 minutes I was out of there. The woman there obviously was not in the mood to talk so she didn't asked me anything. My flight arrived around 930 am, i think were the first plane in so basically it was not busy yet. They will not check the x-ray thing because the result is already in the envelop.

Good luck to everyone..

Sam

beetee4ever,

Wow - it's been a long time since we've had an x-ray question.

My wife's was negative (nothing of note on it) so we left it in the trash bin at the doctor's office.

X-ray film is almost exactly like ordinary black & white photographic film, just sensitive to slightly different wavelengths of light. Once an X-ray film has been developed and fixed, it's just like a photo negative, and it's not sensitive to light or X-rays anymore. So the X-ray machine at airport security won't affect your X-ray at all.

We carried ours in the carry-on luggage, because we didn't know what else to do with it. We were relatively sure we wouldn't need it at the POE, and we didn't need it.

The officials at the POE are not medical doctors, and are not qualified to interpret the meaning of an X-ray. A physician has already read the X-ray and written up his findings in the paperwork he sent to the embassy. After the physician has given you a clean bill of health, immigration has no more use for the X-ray.

It might be of some limited use if you later develop some condition such that your physician could benefit from seeing a "baseline" X-ray that shows your history. So go ahead and save it if you want.
