ssn application

you can apply either way. you should apply anytime between 2 weeks after you enter the US (to give DHS time to update the SSA system) until 2 weeks before the I-94 expires (day 76 from US entry).

basically, you should apply from day 14 to day 76 after entry.

you should get your card within about 5-10 days, unless you are not in tha SSA system, then it may take up to 6 weeks.

Also, if anyone from the SSA office tells you that you cannot get your SS card because you have a K1 visa, try to get someone else or go to a different office. Some people at the SSA are not aware of how the rules apply to K1 visa holders.

You also need to go back and update your immigration status once you get the greencard... You can do the name change and immigration status update all in one trip if you want... It is relatively easy, except it must be done in person and you will have to wait in line if the office is busy. The card should be re-issued within 10-14 days.

YMMV
