Hello!

Just wanted to share my bad experience... I don't know what to do.

I applied one month ago to get a SSN without success. A couple weeks after, they finally decided to mail a manual request to LA or something likethat. The lady at my local SSA told me to come back two weeks after because there would be chances that they received an answer and be able to give me a SSN. I did so, and bad surprise: The mail they sent was apparently "undeliverable" and so it got returned to them after 2 weeks... So they resent it, but I stupidely lost 2 weeks in the whole process... And that makes me crazy!

And on the top of that, I still haven't received any biometrics appointment when many others who applied at the same time than me have... :crying:

All this is very frustrating. The worst is that I badly want to pass my DL and get an ID and be covered to my husband's med insurance, but with no SSN, all this is simply impossible :(

.....

Go to another SSA office, apparently the office you are dealing with is CLUELESS about K-1 visas. K-1 can apply for SSN with 75 days of entry, after that and they will need to wait for EAD or Green-card to get SSN.

This is such a common topic: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...=154855&hl=

Thanks for that... However, there is no SSA around here, I live in central Alaska and the next closest SSA is very very far away, about 7 hours by car. But I think they know what they are doing. It is just that from the beginning, I wasn't in their SAVE system. The person there knew about K1 and its specifications, she did electronic verification with DHS with no result, and that is when she sent the manual request. Unfortunately for me, the post messed up and because of them, the manual request is now 2 weeks late... So at SSA, they haven't received anything back and have no clue when they will apparently. All this is simply very frustrating...

Don't let it frustrate, think or K-3 holders, they CANNOT apply for SSN until they have EAD or Green-card.

Most Members of Congress have a staff person who will immediately get the Social Security Administration to act. Get your husband to try his Congressman's office. The SSA is usually more helpful than your office, but some of the staff may not be as well trained as others. I am surprised they used snail mail to begin with.

I guess it's worth a shot, but SSA can't assign the SSN until immigration verifies her status and a large amount of the G-845 are mailed to LA, but I have a feeling that something might be happening soon.

I also agree that sending stuff through the mail is the slowest way to do it, but this is the way DHS wants SSA to do it.

Our experience is that you do not need a SS# to be covered by health insurance. Actually, your husband has a limited time (30 days i believe) to enroll you - my insurance took our marriage cert, her name, DOB and pended my wife's SS# until it arrived. Unfortunately, if it has been more than 30 days after the "qualifying event" (this would be marriage) to enroll, and he has not enrolled you, you have to wait until the next enrollment period (usually end of plan year).

Medical insurance and social security numbers have nothing to do with one another after a qualifying (life changing) event. Case in point - newborn children are enrolled immediately and rarely have a SS number assigned within 30 days.

i don't get it.

It's probably going to vary from company to company and it's totally up to the company to enroll you or not without an SSN.

When am I legally required to provide my Social Security number?

http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa.cf....php?p_faqid=78

The Privacy Act regulates the use of Social Security numbers by government agencies. When a federal, state, or local government agency asks an individual to disclose his or her Social Security number, the Privacy Act requires the agency to inform the person of the following: the statutory or other authority for requesting the information; whether disclosure is mandatory or voluntary; what uses will be made of the information; and the consequences, if any, of failure to provide the information.

If a business or other enterprise asks you for your number, you can refuse to give it. However, that may mean doing without the purchase or service for which your number was requested. For example, utility companies and other services ask for a Social Security number, but do not need it; they can do a credit check or identify the person in their records by alternative means.

Giving your number is voluntary, even when you are asked for the number directly. If requested, you should ask why your number is needed, how your number will be used, what law requires you to give your number and what the consequences are if you refuse. The answers to these questions can help you decide if you want to give your Social Security number. The decision is yours.
