I was going through my basement sorting things for garage sale, garbage, charity and keep.

I found a box of my report cards and certificates, class photos...things from my childhood. Also came across my old high school leather jacket, you know the one with your name on the arm lol. I feel like I should keep these things, they are a connection to my past. But then I wonder if I will ever even look at them again.

We are getting a uhaul trailer and I am not taking much, so it is not really a space consideration.

I am the anti pack rat usually but am not sure about these things.

Just wondering if other people keep things like this when making the big move?

Keep some stuff cause your kids will want to see it someday... it will be like ancient artifacts. I know that I always wished my Mom didn't throw so much stuff away and I wish I could see more stuff from her childhood, and my Dad's.

I'd def. keep the ol' letter jacket and childhood stuff...you may want to look back on it one day and wax nostalgic..or like Sarah said.show your kids...especially since space isn't really an issue! :) M.

PS..>I've thrown some things away in past, that I really wish I'd kept......sometimes a big "cleaning spree" can cause regrets later... :)

when I moved here I got rid of all the stuff that was replaceable.... but I kept the stuff that wasn't repalceable or had special value/meaning to me... I eneded up with only two 60L rubbermaid tubs of stuff plus one big suitcase and one smaller suitcase of clothes.... I don't miss any of the stuff I gave away...

I have very bad 'pack rat' tendencies which i have to fight against all the time. Moving has helped me get rid of a lot of clutter.

My watchword has been 'what if there was a fire - would I actually miss it'? and also 'when did I last look at that?'

A lot of things only serve to jog your memory - your memories you take with you wherever you go. Sure its nice if you have some of the old old cr@p but its not necessary. I took a deep breath and threw out all my projects from school - my daughter was never very interested apart from a quick 5 min look; she doesn't even read the books (fiction) and toys I kept all those years for her

All my singles and albums are going out as well.

I'm keeping old photos - but that's it as far as 'stuff from the attic' goes.

if you MUST keep something - then keep one or 2 old school books - throw the jacket away or give it to goodwill - who in your family is gonna wear it again anyways? :)

Keep it for sentimental purposes if nothing else:-). Since you have the space you don't need to decide now if this is worthwhile holding on to or letting go. You will have a lot of things to discard that are obvious. If, after you move and have re-established yourself in your new home, you decide that you don't want to keep all of it, you can decide then by sorting through what is valid and what isn't. Once you throw it out, that option is gone and you may end up regretting losing some integral part of your identity when you find yourself trying to find out who and where you are in your new home and new country. I kept 2 large boxes of childhood papers and personal memorabilia - and got great comfort and joy out of going through them once I got here. It felt like a connection to my past when all of the other ones had been severed.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I have one box of school stuff and other "useless" things that have accumulated since that I lug around with me everywhere. I have a scrapbook that I made in gr. 9, a monologue that I did in gr.11 drama, some pictures that my jr. kindergarten class drew for me when I was a TA, yadda yadda yadda....I did toss out my old diary tho. I sat and read a few pages of it one day and said "who the hell is this person?" and tossed it!

I am thinking of allowing myself and the kids each one box for sentimental stuff....if it does not fit it will not come.

I have their home made baby blankets and birth stuff in boxes for them, I have to keep those.

My jacket has sooooooo many memories!! It is crazy, I put it on and it all came flooding back....every party, football game, friend..... But I have not looked at it in years and probably won't. It is really small on me too lol.

I'd definitely keep the kids things and the jacket. Maybe keep just a few of the kids things from each year that has a special meaning. I recently went through the 3 boxes of things my kids made for me and kept the more sentimental things they had made for me, mothers day cards, things they were most proud of etc. I also started putting their sculptures out on the shelf for everyone to see and I get more comments about those than I do other things I have out!
