Considering relocating to Vietnam

Okay well things haven't been going as well as we had planned in obtaining our visa so we are considering possibly living in Vietnam instead. I am torn as to what to do but know that we will both be miserable for as long as we are apart. I know that it will be a big commitment and would require a lot of sacrifices but it would for her as well to mover here and leave her friends and family behind. My question is how would an American go about finding a job in Vietnam? I work in the telecommunications field as a manager. I speak very little Vietnamese though. I know that there are a lot of American and European people living and working in Vietnam. Also, we would prefer to purchase a house instead of renting an apartment. We would like to stay with the vicinity of Ho chi Minh City but not in Ho chio Minh City. Are there any areas that anyone recommends and what should I expect to pay for a house?

I would greatly appreciate any information that anyone could provide in this topic.

Thanks in advance,

J&Q

Thank you for the information. It looks like there are a ton of opportunities on this site. I posted my resume and am hoping that something comes to fruition.

If Vietnam is anything like Thailand, all I can say is good luck. If the choice is a local and a foreigner, the local is going to win out. That is unless you have some skill set that is in very high demand (something that very, very few in Vietnam can do).

I had considered doing just that at one time, but soon realized that there is no way I could pay my bills back in the USA on what I could make in Vietnam. So, unless you are debt-free and obligation free in the U.S., I don't see how you can swing it in Vietnam.

I have been trying to pay off my debt as much as possible. I figure that it will take me about 1 year to pay off most of my debt if everything goes as planned. Vietnam may be more of a stable economy than here in the U.S. where unemployment is on the rise and the cost of living is going up. It gets me so angry that the U.S. can give these corporations $700 billion while the average citizen struggles each day to pay their bills. All that I ask is to be reunited with my fiancee, its not like I am asking for $700 billion.

Unfortunately the financial crisis is far reaching. Both Europe and Asia are starting to feel it now. I don't think there is going to be a "safe haven" when it comes to this.

The inflation rates eased slightly in Sept to 27.9%. The cost of living is on the rise in VN.

Thank you for the information hnHnitsu. My spouse and I were considering starting a small business but were concerned about the corruption associated with running a business in Vietnam. We are considering moving to Vietnam to be together while we sort out the visa issues. I have been told it could take several years before USCIS even reviews the petition once it is sent back. If we both like it we may consider staying indefinitely.

While waiting for USCIS sort out the visa issues, and you can stay in vietnam open small business.

For Example.

1. Ban Tap Hoa = miscellaneous good for daily use (buying or renting a small house in Binh Duong or Bien Hoa, or where ever you two feel very confortable staying together).

2. Quan Bun, Pho, Com. = Noodle, Pho, and Rice (If your spouse knows how to cook, you only have to work less than 4 hrs in the morning).

3. Quan Cafe = Coffee shop (small less than $2000)

4. Dich Vu Internet = Internet Cafe (if you know how to fixed computer, trouble shoots, Server installation, it would be a good ideas to open a Dich Vu).

Most of mine friends living in Viet Nam with their wife opening a small business, and they life are very happy, no stress, and very relaxing. I am thinking about going back to Viet Nam before TET (Chinese New year), after my paperwork move from USCIS to NVC. while I am waiting for my wife coming over, it would be a good opportunity for me to spend some quality time with her, and her family in VN, and we both will starting all new family in America.

I was an English teacher in Southeast Asia for a number of years, that could be something to look into. I never taught in Veitnam, but there were many attempts to recruit teachers to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos etc. There are so many oppurtunities for English teachers in SE asia. For many, the requirements are only being a native speaker depending on which school a person is employed with there could be more such as a degree (normally any degree will do) and still others like to see a TEFL/TESOL type certificate as well. I knew blokes that came through with no experience and/or education and taught in some schools for anywhere from 3 months to years and years. If its something you want to look into PM me and I can share more information with you.

If you want to teach, get your TESOL (more common in the US...TEFL is more common in the UK) because without it, your very small wage will be even smaller. I think most reputable schools expect this. I don't know how things are in VN, but in Thailand, the government is really cracking down on the requirements. Although not a problem for you, those that don't have a degree and are working in Thailand are doing so at their own peril.

That is true. I dont mean to say one should try "flying under the radar" and teaching without meeting the minimum requirements for the country they are teaching in I surely didn't do that. I had a degree and as far as the TESOL I did a part-time, evenings and weekend course in San Fransisco and had my TESOL within a matter of about four months. If you're able to devote full-time then you can get your TESOL in a matter of about four to six weeks. By the way if you're interested in reading up on the requirements for any country or asking questions, as well as searching for a job Daves ESL cafe is by far one of the best sites out there. What VJ is to visas Daves is to the ESL/EFL teacher. It can be found at http://eslcafe.com there you will find forums, country specific by region. From what I read just in passing Vietnam seems to have pretty lax enforcement. That being said I'm not suggesting anyone not follow the requirements.
