Haaaappy Saturday MENA!

Getting out to enjoy some of this NY sunshine while it lasts!

Nawal - have fun with the food making. My daughter was born with food & milk allergies - so I remember those days all too clearly! I doubt I have anything left - she's 14 now, some allergies still - but if I run across anything will be sure to let you know.. Enjoy playing!

Good Morning Mena

Hope you all are well

I like seeing the updated baby pix...thanks KS

WELCOME HOME STAR, although veggin on the beach in paradise is much more appealing I am sure

COLD...OMG I already cant take it, and anyone who knows me knows....I am already hibernating

Nawal....I learned so much after having 3 kids

but one thing I learned is as soon as they are ready just puree and mash up everything you eat

start them young, you wont have picky eaters....good luck to you

dont stress yourself out buying expensive tricky gadgets...just a food processor or chopper will do

beautiful fall day here in Philly and well I am taking my daughter to pick apples

typical "autumn" thing to do

thank god I got internet working again at work but NO WORK TODAY

I am fighting off my routine and very seasonal Head Cold...aaaaahhhhhhhhhh choooooooooo

take care all

I wonder if we are going to be in AP forever.................

Ganja Girl- love the representation of the cat brain, lol

As for me today, I've decided my apartment is just too small (severe lack of closet space). I had hoped to wait until my husband came to have him help me pick a new place, but we still have no idea when he will come. For now I am going to find a decent house to rent and if he wants we can always find something else later. By the time I can move in the house it will be cold enough I don't have to worry about lawn mowing which is good because I don't have a lawn mower. I'm just tired of living in aparmtents.

my question would be why? ha but i guess times have changed, seems i remember mine starting the cereals (oatmeals) about 6-8 weeks at bedtime for better sleep..they are grown and did fine

The pediatrician asked us to wait till about 6 months. Zain my son is almost 16 pounds and Nour is 12 so they are healthy weight for drinking only milk plus they sleep thru the night and so he thought lets try to wait. I really was asking more about advice or experiences on making foods, etc. :D

I ordered two books about making baby food...I'm excited to start once I feel the babies are ready for first foods...2 early right now. Maybe around 6 months. I need to start ordering supplies to make and contain the food... . I think it should be fun!! :star:

Any suggestions are welcomed! (F)

Here's my $.02

They may be ready before 6 months. Mehdi was ready at 3 1/2 months, my nephew at 4, etc.

Usually if a baby:

Shows interest in your food

Can turn their head away or close their mouth to show they are full

Has doubled his/her birthweight

Weighs over 13 pounds (some docs vary on this)

Can sit with support

Then they are about ready for solid food (baby food). It is usually advised you start with a single grain cereal like rice or oatmeal. Every baby is different, but my son and the babies I cared for before him usually did very well on rice. The cereal is kind of a teaching tool so they can learn how to eat. Start by mixing it with alot water, formula, or breast milk to make it soupy. Baby can sort of slurp it off the spoon.

Once they are doing well on rice (or whatever) cereal, move on to veggies and fruits. (By the way, you'll know very easily if they are doing well on the cereal. If they keep spitting it back, its either too thick, or they arent ready. Wait a couple of weeks and try again. Also, some moms add a bit of rice cereal to baby's bedtime bottle so they have something sticking to their ribs. Im not really a fan of this, but Mehdi doesnt drink from a bottle anymore, so it doesnt really apply to me. Ask your pediatrician.)

Some people say to start on veggies so they wont get spoiled by the sweetness of fruits. Others say it doesnt matter. Personally, my son likes both and his first food was bananas. He likes them equally, but I try to always serve equal amounts of fruits and veggies at each meal. Start with single ingredients: Bananas, Applesauce, Carrots, Green Beans, Peas, Sweet Potatoes, Pears, etc. These are usually not allergy-inducing foods, but if they are you'll be able to tell quickly. Feed the same food for 2-4 days (ask your doc what they recommend) and watch for a reaction if baby is allergic. Note that baby might be allergic now and may outgrow this allergy in a few months or years. Also, it can take several tries before baby 'likes' a particular food, so you may have to drop a food for a few days and try it again in a week.

That should be enough to get your started. And making homemade baby food sounds like fun, let me know how it goes :) Also, if you've havent done so, I recommend hitting the manufactuer websites like BeechNut, Heinz, Gerber, Pampers, Baby.com, etc and sign up for their newsletters and freebies. Every week I get several email newsletters full of neat stuff. Lots of info on development, illness, advice, feeding, etc. Good stuff! Oh and coupons and samples in the mail, also faboo!

Thanks! (F)

Oh annie, you are brave...Making your own foods...THATS AWESOME!!!

Right now we switch between Natures Goodness Organics and Gerber Stage 2...We also do the rice and oatmeal cereals with added DHA..

I dont think Zaid could have ever waited til 6 months, He would have been drinking 10 bottles a day...were down to 4 or 5 and its GREAT!

Did you buy a machine to make the foods? im always curious how it would turn out...

My big boy is soo funny lately...He gives HUGS!!! He puts his hands on your cheeks, laughs, then wraps his arms around ya...It melts my heart!! He has been so fun and easy, very independant. I tell ya what..the baby is probably gonna scare the doc at his 6 month checkup...he eats soo well and big portions. I Bet he will have gained about 4 lbs in 2 months...we give him a sippy cup with very diluted juice just to practice and he actually knows how to hold it and bring it to his mouth, tipping it back stil needs to be tackled...but hes doing well..I wont ever give Juice from a bottle..no disrespect to people who do..but my nephew is 2.5 and still wont give it up..the bottle will be GONE at 10-12 months...bad habit...its bad enough he sucks his fingers, lol

Welll now that my tangent has ended...Hope everyone has a good day.. I called off work so i dont go back til monday!!

Brave.... NOT! I'm just thinking it would be fun plus healthier (preservatives, etc) The twins are doing good with bottles and weight gain I guess all babies are different. They sleep thru the night and are at about 5 bottles a day. I think we can make it to at least 5 months maybe 6. You hear so many opinions about overweight toddlers, picky eaters, etc all for or against waiting. Blah...:P

I think if you have the patience making your own baby food is a great idea. I don't have any suggestions though....my guy is not a big eater at all. He is seven months old weighs a little over 17 pounds but is extremely long and eats only 3 jars of baby food a day. I just don't think he is going to be a big eater. We buy only preservative free baby food and its not that hard to find if you ever have to use it as a filler. He will also try smashed up bits of table food. Good luck Annie, let me know how it goes when you do start.

Sara, feel better.

Have a great weekend everybody!
