I really miss eating snakes and Iguanas B)

:o:o:o:o

Just kidding.

Yet, it is true that you may still find iguanas and some reptiles to eat in Guiana, although they are not a "common" delicatessen anymore! Their meat actually taste pretty good  . Indigeneous people of the Guyanas used to hunt to eat and would occasionally eat iguanas or snakes, simply because they were plentiful in the rainforest and easy to catch (as compared to other mamals). But don't worry, things have changed a little after Guiana was introduced to western culture.... B)

Sometimes I think I know everything, and I regain consciousness. Seen it all, done it all, forgot most of it....

So much plenitude, yet so much emptiness

I miss a lot of Indonesian foods and authentic chinese foods. I miss our tofu (it's different than the one they have in supermarket), our fruits: mangoes, durians, etc...

You can get mexican mangoes in most groceries ( krogers etc0 now and also durian in oriental groceries.

Never tried mexican mangoes before, but the mangoes they got in grocery stores here come from Peru (or Brazil) and they are just not the same. They are much smaller and have different textures. Durian in oriental grocery stores has been frozen for months and they just yuck !! I miss the real thing !! :P

Another thing I find is almost impossible to find unless you can go to a specialist foodie shop and pay through the nose ... decent bacon that actually has some meat included in it. The stuff they call bacon here is just wafer thin slices of streaky fat and water. What's that all about? The nearest thing I can find easily is the round 'Canadian Bacon', it tasts OK and it's OK for some things, but it's just not the same as the real thing and wouldn't work for lots of recipes since it's already cooked. :(

Oh for a real fried egg & crispy bacon butty on warm fresh bread! :P

All the best,

Sheila

things that i used to get free (or cheap) now cost an arm and a leg and half the things i want i can't find. when i was in florida it was no problem but up here its really difficult. i want conch salad so bad right now... and a big piece of sugar cane... perfect for summertime... yum...

i am getting a herb garden kit because i am used to getting fresh ones from my mum's yard and i don't much like paying out the a$$ for the fresh ones in the store.

i can get some familar things from local west indian shops, but its still not as good as from home. sigh... i need to bring my mum & sisters up for a week, chain them to the stove so they can cook all my favorite dishes in bulk.

I miss many Finnish and Scandinavian foods. It's just not possible to get certain foods and ingredients here. I've found crisp bread and some Finnish candy in the local stores and delis and then there is the Scandinavian shop too but it's way too expensive. My mum sends me quite a lot of stuff like salmiac and Finnish chocolates and I know a few websites that sell Finnish foods too. I was surprised to find Finnish licorice at a Greek deli here. I can't wait til they'll open an IKEA store here cuz IKEA usually has some Scandinavian foods available. Decent bread and a variety of dairy products are the most difficult to find. I've noticed that German and Russian bakeries have good bread and the German and Dutch delis sell a wide variety of dairy products you can't get anywhere else here. I also tried making quark myself once (I miss quark most of all dairy products!)...let's just say I think I'll head to the German deli next time

I found a recipe for homemade quark on wikipedia, when looking it up to see what it was.

http://www.math.wisc.edu/~meyer/Quark.html

It might be worth trying to make it, if you have a real hankering for it. :)

I have a recipe for quark..actually a couple of them. The home made kind just isn't as nice and smooth

Ah, okay. I understand. It's a shame the Scandinavian store doesn't carry it. The British food store has cheddar cheese in one of the refridgerator units, although I've found some pretty good stuff at CostCo.

Yep, you can buy those awful things in Dallas, too. :P

I found this picture on wikipedia...

XD That's awesome. It's against the law in Malaysia to ride in public transportation with one of those things.
