If that were the case, it would be on the front page of the webpage of the US Embassy/Consulate in Budapest...but as you can see here, there's nothing going...yet.

Who Needs a Visa?

Hungarian citizens need a visa to travel the United States.

AFAIK, according to the March 17, 2008 signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), Hungary is on a 'fast-track' to becoming eligible to be in the VWP, but they still must reduce their visa refusal rates below 10%. Last year their visa refusal rate was 10.3%, so there is a real chance that they'll qualify this year. We will have to see the # of visa refusals in FY 2008 (the fiscal year ended in Sept. 30, 2008...so this will become published soon). If Hungary does qualify, it will still a little time before Hungary is formally accepted into the VWP. (Signing of agreements and such...)

I'm sure that once this becomes official, it will be font-page news in Hungary, and you'll not need a google-microscope to find it. I am def. keeping my fingers crossed. :)

According to the Budapest/Hungary Embassy - citizens of Hungary still need a visa.

Given the timing (end of September - US's fiscal year end) it may have been a piece on how surely the visa refusal # will be under 10% and now Hungary will qualify for VWP....and you know the rumor mill, a "maybe" becomes a "yes" very quickly. ;)
