This is a decent article about the debate:

...The good news for the McCain campaign is that Mrs Palin was confident and assertive, and made no big errors. The bad news is that a mediocre performance counts as good news. But they will take what they can get at this point. ...

The flow chart is hilarious - and sadly acurate. Does anyone feel that lowering the general publics' expectations of politicians to this level might actually be dangerous for the US? Or, will the behind the scenes guys just take over anyway and these kinds of farcical performances are really irrelevant anyway?

Yeah that sums it up pretty well....

The McCain campaign had lobbied for a constricted debate format: two-minute questions, without long freewheeling exchanges. This worked well for Mrs Palin. It seemed that she had memorised some talking points and was determined not to deviate from them. “And I may not answer the questions the way that either the moderator or you want to hear,” she said, near the beginning. “But I'm going to talk straight to the American people and let them know my track record also.”

This was effective, if blunt. One telling exchange came when the moderator, Gwen Ifill, asked Mr Biden whether Americans have the stomach to put troops on the ground in Darfur, a war-torn region in western Sudan. Mr Biden noted his early advocacy for an intervention in Bosnia, the objections that were raised and the eventual success of the mission. He concluded that America should rally the world to intervene in Darfur.

Mrs Palin offered a response first to comments on Iraq. “Oh, yeah, it's so obvious I'm a Washington outsider,” said Mrs Palin. “And someone just not used to the way you guys operate. Because here you voted for the war and now you oppose the war.” She went on, however, to agree that a no-fly zone should be supported in Darfur.

Not least because those doing the dumbing down, or profiting from it, are anything but dumb.

This is how we ended up with a VP who could say something scandalous about the remit of his office, and just by him saying "its legal" noone challenges it.

It might be said that politicians rely on people not knowing the facts, and if the persistent (and misguided) accusations of elitism against the left are any indication - they're doing little more than using snobbery to justify their own ignorance.

It's easy to say that Palin supporters are dumber, but that would be inaccurate. I was sitting around the campfire last night drinking a beer & smoking a cigar with 3 buddies of mine... 2 Republicans & a Democrat. Of course someone asked "so what did you think of the debate last night" & I swear it was like we saw a different debate! The two Republicans thought Palin did well & the Democrat (and myself) thought Biden clearly won.

All of us have at least a Bachelors degree & a good job... we're all "joe six packs" as Palin would say. However we saw the same debate & came away with very different impressions of what happened. My point? People see what they want to see & draw conclusions based on their past experiences. Now the extremes on both ends of the spectrum (far right & far left) are the dangerous groups because no matter what happens they support their candidate, truth be damned. It's one thing to see the world from a certain perspective, but its quite another to see the world with blinders on.
