I finally received my EAD a couple of days ago. :dance: (Originally valid for 1 year, but only 10 months left since it took them two months to get my biometrics and issue the card!)

Does it make any sence to apply for SSN now, or should I wait until after the AOS interview, which is scheduled in two weeks?

Thanks

The EAD should be sufficient to allow you to get an SSN.

Depends if you want to start working or not.

Your birth certificate and EAD card along with Form SS-5 is all you should need to apply. However, your status still needs to be verified before you can be assigned an SSN or issued a card and I would count on the SSA office needing to send a Form G-845 to immigration to manually verify your status.

Thank you for your replies!

So, I am allowed to apply for SSN now :D

Still more questions:

1) will they take my documents away from me (I-94, passport, etc.) or just look at them at SSA? I cannot give them my documents since I have to bring them to my AOS interview;

2) when/if I get my 2-year green card, will I have to go to SSA again to notify them that my status changed? Will they issue a new card? Will they charge me again?

Thank you

They will not take any originals, but may need to take a copy. No big deal.

Yes, you will need to apply to remove "Valid for work only with DHS authorization" notation, but you don't have to do it right away.

I'd apply now for SSN -- the sooner you apply the sooner you get it, especially if you want to work. If they send it for manual verification, it may take 4-6 week to get the card.
