Both parties are pro-status quo on that issue.

Pretty much. They can't alienate that many voters even though, as I mentioned above- the Republicans count on their religious fundamentalists to get them some votes. Its pretty much useless thinking they'd vote elsewhere, since to them I am sure the alternatives are having a Muslim anti-Christ in office.

As I say its a non-issue given that the point of contention appears to be over who actually owns the word "marriage".

Yep. It will boil down to whose definition we let ourselves fall under- an imposed, religious decree or a civil one we choose to define. I wonder why they can't get over it and accept (tolerate) both and move on with their lives and do things that 'people of God' should be doing like fighting poverty and helping their fellow brethren.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Well, let's see, that would mean that most fundies would have to give up their cash instead of confining their religious activity to ranting against 'sin'. Not going to happen

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

But pretty much any career woman does that to an extent - more often than not both parents are working and the kids inevitably spend time in daycare.

yep, but those are not good family values, which was my point.

Family values have evolved since the 1950s.

 good one.

it's a shame palin's policies haven't. ;)

But she did say she wasn't against homosexual civil unions. Which should alienate some of that religious fundamentalist element that is an important base in the Republican campaign machinery. From what I understand, they are just pretty much anti-**, and do not wan't to recognize any kind of government sanctioning of homosexual unions from the legal to the social. Just my take.

Both parties are pro-status quo on that issue.

biden said that he approved of giving rights to gay couples, for example in cases of being in hospital, inheritance etc, he just didn't approve of gay "marriage". we don't have gay marriage in the uk either, it is called a civil union, which was not mentioned by either side for some reason?

If she had said "Back to energy" or "Alaska as an energy-producing state" one more time I was going to kill myself.

Her mentioning "soccer moms" a blatant attempt to portray herself as folksy-homesy....it's so obvious, I hope people are smarter than that.......blech.

When all else fails, and you don't know the answer....just go back to energy!!!!!

Biden really touched me when he spoke about being a single parent. THAT was more real than anything Palin had to say "dontcha know"

is there such a thing as common law marriage in the US? or an alternative to a traditional marriage (even within the heterosexual community)? I'm under the understanding that there is not. It would take some serious tweaking of laws I would thing (in immigration and otherwise).

Hmmm... so I wonder what all this right/wrong talk and sin talk is all about from the fundamentalist pov if they are OK with tolerating the Governor's remarks about supporting civil unions... I mean... that is, after all- condoning it in public.

I think it varies by State. Interesting that this doesn't apply to USCIS qualifications for sponsoring visas.

The media comments (I was watching it on Fox) were certainly a bit strange. Mainly interested in how she carried herself, almost no interest in what she said.

I really do not see this all that disturbing, is like when you are teaching your little kid how to ride a bike w/o training wheels, you are more concerned that he/she doesn't fall off the freaking bike than on how well he/she turns corners hahaha

i'm not sure about that. wiki says this about cali though;

California continues to allow domestic-partner registration, a right similar to civil unions found in other states.[8] This grants "same-sex couples all state-level rights and obligations of marriage — in areas such as inheritance, income tax, insurance and hospital visitation" but does not apply to "federal-level rights of marriage that cannot be granted by states".

i don't think that would be difficult for a state to implement?

i think that asking both of them about "gay marriage" when that isn't what california currently has, was misleading.

Didn't they reference Alaska in regards to that topic? Maybe I was too tired to be watching but I thought they were referencing Alaska

Everyone was expecting a Lloyd Benson/ Dan Qayle moment & there wasn't one. However Independents polled felt Biden won & that's what matters (the left & right cancel each other out).

yep

I am sick of the "maverick" speak. We freaking GET IT.

Maverick mavericik Maverick maverick...

Hope change hope change hope Hope change hope change hope Hope change hope change hope Hope change hope change hope

I don't think Biden referenced that campaign slogan at all in the debate.

I doubt Rogue watched the debate at all... probably past his beddy bye time. Again Biden mentioned facts while Palin tried to pull at the heartstrings. Some people buy that approach, but personally I don't. Like I said at the end of the day the opinions of the left & right completely cancel each other out & by all accounts Independents favored Biden (which is what really counts).
