I had no hesitation, quite frankly. I was laid off unexpectedly, I was looking for another job and needed money to live on whilst doing so. I had paid into the system and it was there when I needed it - the way it should be.

I don't understand how Unemployment insurance would be considered a 'government handout'.

If you buy flood insurance from the government and your house gets flooded/you make a claim....is that a government handout?

I don't know about the U.S. - but in Canada the Federal government takes in far more in Unemployment insurance premiums than they pay out.

I went through college solely on financial aid. I was very thankful for that. I did end up with some federal stafford loans too that were subsidized, with low interest rates and the interest didn't accumulate until a certain time had passed. The loans weren't for classes, but for other expenses related to being able to attend college and not work as many hours. (registered Rep)

I don't, but do realize that many do.

I don't understand that part either - same with social security because I think there are "comparable service" out there if it were not done through state/federal especially if you pay into the system your whole working life.
