Joint Sponsor's proof of status...

hi,

I got an RFE for my I-864 Joint sponsor's proof of status. She only has one copy of her birth certificate and we were wondering if I need to send in the original certified copy or if a photocopy will do?

A copy of it should be fine - does he/she have a passport (that'd work too).

NEVER send in any originals, unless you don't mind losing them.

Alright cool I was hoping this was the answer because in the instructions it doesnt actually say anything about the original. But she was really concerned because she only had one, and it would be a hassle for her to get another I guess. She doesnt have a passport yet so I will just make a color copy of her birth certificate.

I think it does say (not on 864 but maybe 485) that you should send clear and unaltered photocopies of original documents, and that the originals may be requested at the interview. I think I read that somewhere.

hm, well, I will research that. I know for the 485 I did send in an original marriage certificate. If thats the case they will let me know right? or should I just assume that at the interview, if I get one, that I should have her birth certificate with me as well?

for the 485 it says:

Unless specifically required that an original document be filed with an application or petition, an ordinary legible photocopy may be submitted. Original documents submitted when not required will remain a part of the record, even if the submission was not required.

so that settles that.
